Of course, it's not just the American ambient music scene, presented here by Steve Roach, Robert Rich, Michael Stearns and Patrick O'Hearn, that is tossed into a syntagm that dismisses it, it's the entire genre that is not taken seriously. Luckily, many modern musicians of that idiom seem to avoid these type of problem that plagued Rich and others, one such is Jon Hopkins. Then again, it could be that he is seen as an Eno figure, he even worked with him and we all know that Eno was never seen as the member of Windham Hill Records' style. Moreover, Jon Hopkins is similar to Eno in the fact that ambient is just one of the flavours of his design, he is not primarily interested in that tone like those we mentioned. Maybe that is why the contemporary electronica dodges the usual criticisms of ambient music, because the characteristics of it blend with other sonic traits.
