Christmas; the one time of the year the Baron family aren’t at each other’s throats. The fires burn long and hot in the stone chimney and the decorations run rampant. Little Joshua always running around the long halls of the manor that seem so dark and empty the other parts of the year, suddenly full of light and Christmas cheer. His mother Mary not making a fuss about school or work. His Father Julius actually home and spending time with the family. All in all, it was exactly what kept little Joshua going the other eleven months of the year.
One cold, snowy, December night little Joshua looked out the living room window; awaiting his father’s return from the store. The storm was expected to last for days and this was the last chance to get groceries for the week. The snow was coming down thick and the light from the house lit up all the nearby snowflakes making it hard to see. A shadowy figure was moving in the distance. Little Joshua pulled the curtains close to his cheeks to block the light from outside. Suddenly it emerged out of the darkness. A pure white deer with antlers as big as little Joshua. It had some grey spots on its hind-back legs and a black nose. It was the most beautiful thing Joshua had ever seen and it was staring right at him. Little Joshua ran to the door and started throwing on his scarf, jacket and boots. He opened the door and ran out into the snow.Â
When he got to where he swore the deer was, it was gone. He looked but the snow made it hard to see much of anything. There were little deer tracks that were starting to fade and little Joshua quickly started following them. His little legs sinking into the snow and sliding on ice every now and then as his heart raced to find the snowy deer his mind could not erase.
Up ahead in the thickest part of the storm he saw headlights pointed at the sky. A car had slid off the road and was now in a ditch. Little Joshua saw the deer behind the car and its head was bent down, pointed at the driver’s door. Little Joshua walked carefully over to the car and realized it was his father’s. He sat down and slowly lowered himself to the car. He opened the door and his father was hunched over the wheel. Little Joshua looked around and the deer was standing next to a large piece of driftwood. He pulled his father onto the board, after unbuckling him and used his jacket to tie his father to the board. Using all his might little Joshua pushed his father up the hill back onto the road (with a little help from his Christmas spirit). Little Joshua got back to the house dragging his father by the feet, using the same tracks he used to reach the car. His mother, Mary, ran out the door to greet them both with blankets and hot chocolate. She had called the police but they were still on the way, due to the storm. When asked how little Joshua knew where to go he just pointed out into the storm, he was too out of breath to tell his mother about the snow white deer that helped him find his father in time.Â
Little Joshua collapsed from exhaustion and woke up the next morning with his father by his bed, reading a newspaper. Neither of them spoke but his father folded the paper and ran his hand through his son’s hair and walked out of the room. Little Joshua got up and walked to his window to look outside. Although there was no deer, there were faint tracks left in the snow and little Joshua had a warm feeling in his heart, knowing that he didn’t have to lose his father during the most magical time of the year.
