The A380plus – nearly a NEO

At the Paris show last week Airbus rolled out an important series of tweaks to the A380.  Most obvious were the new winglets, 4.7M compared to the approximate 1M fences currently used.  Not obvious to the eye are other tweaks to the wing and fuselage.  The combination of these tweaks provides an expected 4% improved fuel burn.

There seems to be some light between the vision by Airbus CEO Fabrice Bregier and sales chief John Leahy.  Whereas Mr Leahy opined at the Dubai air show the A380neo is inevitable and suggested a timeline around 2022 or 2023.  A few weeks later and Mr Bregier has a distinctly different view; 2022 is too soon.

AIRSHOW-Emirates urges Airbus to 'get on with' creating A380neo

Dubai’s national airline Emirates is ready to buy 100 Airbus A380neos if Airbus decides to launch the aircraft, said a report, citing the carrier’s top official.

“What we have said as Emirates is if you are going to do the neo, we are in for 100. Put it on the table – we will start off for you,” said Tim Clark in a Bloomberg TV interview at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Airbus CEO Fabrice Bregier has confirmed plans for an A380neo with more fuel-efficient engines as well as a longer version of the superjumbo – dubbed the A380-900 – capable of carrying even more passengers than today’s double-decker jet.
