"The Zone of Interest" broke me in ways I didn’t expect.
This 2023 film, directed by Jonathan Glazer, is a visceral punch, showing the Höss family living their "dream" life—gardening, swimming, laughing—while Auschwitz’s chimneys loom in the background. The way the film uses sound (those muffled screams, the clatter of trains) to hint at the atrocities is pure genius and utterly terrifying. Christian Friedel’s Rudolf Höss is a cold, calculating monster, yet so human it’s sickening. Sandra Hüller’s Hedwig pretending it’s all normal? Devastating. Based on Martin Amis’s novel, this isn’t just a movie—it’s a mirror reflecting our capacity to ignore evil. I cried, I raged, I sat in silence. If you love films that challenge and haunt, this is unmissable.
