Blaine: Hi :)
I Wasn’t Expecting That || A Blainofsky Para
Who: Blaine Anderson and Dave Karofsky ( @david-karofsky ), appearances of Dave’s parents What: A fishing trip When: Saturday afternoon Where: The Karofsky house and also a lake Notes: Fluff mostly
Blaine was both excited and nervous at the same time. He was about to do something that he'd never really thought about doing before- go fishing. With a dad. Not his dad, but Dave's dad. Dave had invited him to go with them and Blaine hadn't hesitated to say yes. Not only did he want to do stuff that Dave liked to do, but he also liked Dave's dad. He was like a real dad, wanting to spend time with his kid, unlike his own father, who didn't seem to actually even like any of his kids. Today was going to be awesome, and Blaine knew it. He'd been told to dress down, less bowties and belts and more casual clothing, though the most casual thing in his closet was a dark, Navy blue pair of chino shorts, which he paired with a light gray t-shirt and his gym sneakers. Dressing like this made him feel kind of nervous, like he was almost wearing pajamas to go out in public, but he told himself several times that everyone would be wearing shorts and a t-shirt, and being the go-getter that he was, he forced himself to leave it at that. He'd put some sunscreen and water in a backpack, along with some other clothing, just in case they needed to go somewhere other than fishing, hopped in his Uber and was at Dave's house in ten minutes, knocking on the front door. He patted his solidly gelled hair while he waited.
Dave called out to his dad that he would get the door and Paul waved in response as he continued to pack up the cooler and their fishing gear. He loved going fishing with his dad and he was excited that Blaine was going to go with them this time. He was a little nervous, of course, but he figured everything would be alright. He still hadn’t told his parents about their relationship, and both of them simply thought they were just friends. He was glad that his dad allowed him to go along, but his dad was always nice and inclusive of other people. He answered the door and he smiled, letting Blaine inside. Every day he spent with Blaine he was getting more comfortable around him and finding himself having an easier time with their relationship. He was happy to see him and he wanted to hug him, but he didn’t, instead he shut the door and walked back with Blaine following to the kitchen with his dad. He had packed everything up already so they could head out and Dave grabbed a pole for himself and one for Blaine.
Blaine whispered a little hello and gave his boyfriend a smile that was reserved only for him as he was let into the house. He loved Dave's house. Everything about it was warm and inviting, including Dave's parents. "Hi Mr. Karofsky," he greeted, polite as ever. He was impressed that everything seemed to be ready already, and watched as Dave picked up two fishing poles. He had no idea how to use them, but he was sure that he'd learn- someone would teach him, or he could learn by watching.
Paul had just laughed and shook his head and told Blaine, “Just call me Paul, it’s alright.” And Dave rolled his eyes playfully at Blaine. He knew that Blaine was a nice guy and raised to be polite but his parents really didn’t mind anyone calling them by their first name. They were all pretty laid back people. Dave carried Blaine’s pole and his own as well as the tackle box and his dad put his fishing hat on his head and winked with a smile as they headed out to his truck. Dave’s Mom, Max, was gardening in the front yard and waved to them happily and told them to have fun. “Suppose we could take your truck, huh, Dave?” Paul suggested, putting the things into the back and heading for the drivers side. Dave let Blaine crawl into the truck first and he put the stuff in the back before crawling in after him. “Sorry we gotta squeeze.” Dave grinned, his body pressing close to his boyfriend’s.
Blaine smiled at Dave's dad. It was so hard to call other people's parents by their first names; that was something he was still trying to get used to. He told himself to remember to call him Paul next time. Â As they went outside, Blaine looked over at Dave's mom and offered a smile and a little wave before Paul suggested that they take Dave's truck. Now that was something Blaine could get excited about. He didn't know why, but building the car with his dad last summer had made him like cars, especially ones that people took the time to rebuild. "I have wanted to go for a ride in your truck since you told me about it, I can't wait to hear it run," he said, sliding into the bench seat and the scooting over to the middle. He liked having Dave up against him like that, but having Mr. Karofsky so close kind of killed all positiveness for him. Â "It's okay, I'm kind of small."
Both Dave and his dad laughed, and Paul started the truck, explaining to him about the kinds of things they’d done to it. Dave wanted to grab his hand but he didn’t, afraid of it being obvious. Instead, he let his leg press against Blaine’s on purpose, giving him a soft smile as they all chatted on the ride down. It was a short drive, and soon they were pulling into the the parking for the lake. Not a lot of people were around, and it was quiet because of all the fisherman. Dave hoped out and held out his hand for Blaine to grab so he could help him out.
Blaine listened intently as Paul talked about what they'd done to the truck. He was impressed, but slightly distracted after a moment with how close Dave was and how he pressed his leg up against his and just how much Blaine wanted to hold his hand in the car- but he kept himself on track. When they arrived at the lake and Dave jumped out of the truck, Blaine gladly took his hand to get out of the truck. It wasn't that he needed help, it was that he desperately wanted to hold the other's hand and this was as close as they were going to get. He jumped down and let his hand linger for maybe too long before he let go and blushed a little. He looked out at the lake, noticing how few cars were there and deciding he was okay with that. "So, where are we going?" he asked, turning to find Dave's dad.
Dave wanted to keep his hand in Blaine’s, but he reluctantly let go as his dad care around from the side of the truck to collect the things from the back. “We’ll walk down there aways, and there’s a dock. Shouldn’t be too busy today, usually isn’t.” Paul said, handing Blaine a pole and Dave grabbed his own pole and the tackle box as well. He was glad his hands were full so he wouldn’t find himself tempted to hold his boyfriend’s hand. Dave let his dad walk ahead of them and he lingered back with Blaine, smiling at him as they walked along toward the lake. It was small, but it was their favorite place to fish because it wasn’t as crowded. When they’d found a spot to put there things, Dave sat down on the dock, leaving room beside him for Blaine to sit next to him and Paul found a spot a little further away from them. Dave put his pole next to him and looked at Blaine, reaching over him for his pole. “I can help you, put the bait on it and stuff.” He said, grabbing for the tackle box. Paul just worked on his own, watching the boys put their bait on the hooks, occasionally giving his son and Blaine tips. When it was all ready to go, Dave stood up, preparing to show Blaine how to cast the line.
Blaine took the fishing pole he was handed, feeling a little awkward holding it. He looked at Dave and Mr. Karofsky to see how they were holding theirs and tried to mimic them. He followed as they started to walk toward their fishing spot, smiling at Dave as he fell back and they walked together. Blaine was trying so many new things with Dave. Fishing, golfing, driving- even if it was a golf cart. So far he was enjoying himself with all of the things Dave liked to do. He sat down next to his boyfriend as he offered to bait the line for him. Putting a hook through a worm sounded disgusting, but since someone else was offering to do it for him, he decided it wasn’t that bad. They stood back up together and Dave showed him how to cast the line, which Blaine tried and didn’t completely suck at. He stood there, next to his boyfriend, in the quiet, just standing there, and he couldn't help but just move a tiny bit and lightly bump into the other. It was a simple gesture, but it was still a tiny flirty one that he knew could go unnoticed by Dave's dad.
Dave nudged him back with a small smile. He was glad that Blaine realized he couldn't do anything too obvious in front of his dad. He knew that lately he and Blaine had been doing a lot of what he liked and it made him happy that Blaine wasn't as different as him as he originally thought, but he always sort of wondered what kinds of things Blaine liked to do. "What do you think?" he asked, knowing that fishing could get boring for some people because a lot of it was a waiting game. Dave enjoyed standing in the breeze, watching the gentle waves. He sat then, letting his legs dangle off the dock but not touch the water. He tugged at Blaine's leg to get him to sit down next to him and looked over at his dad, who was facing away from them on the dock. He gave his boyfriend a grin, wishing he could kiss him because it seemed like so long since he had but he had to settle for subtle glances. Hiding this relationship was getting to be annoying, but there were still reasons why he just felt too scared to share with everyone. "Maybe next week...we could do something you like?" he asked softly, looking back out at his line in the water.
Blaine smiled a little smile, one that he tried to make sure Dave's dad didn’t see. He loved the little flirty things they did together. It was a special thing for just the two of them. He thought for a second when Dave asked him what he thought. "Actually, it's kind... relaxing. Especially in the right company," he replied, smiling out at where his line disappeared into the water. "And the lake is pretty too." Blaine had an appreciation for beautiful things, conventional or not. He loved nature and animals but he also loved beautiful words or moments. Glancing up, he smiled again. "Are you sure about that?" he questioned, wanting to be sure before he got excited because what he wanted to do next week didn’t seem like it was up his boyfriend's alley in the slightest. "I wanted to go see a show at the performing arts center. A musical. Um, it's called Newsies." He hesitated. "We don't have to do that though. We could... bake cookies together instead." The last thing he wanted to do was make the other do something Blaine knew he would hate.
“Bake cookies?” Dave raised an eyebrow and he couldn’t help but laugh. Ever since he turned 14 he tried to stay out of the kitchen, it made him seem more feminine than he wanted people to see, even if he loved to help his mom in the kitchen as a kid. Although now, cooking and baking didn’t seem as feminine as he had once thought. Though, baking with Blaine sounded fun, it also didn’t sound all that interesting. “What’s that Newsie thing about?” He asked, glancing over at Blaine before looking back over the water. “Can’t be that bad right? You like it.” He shrugged. It wasn’t his thing, the musical and dance thing, but Blaine seemed really interested and actually kind of excited about it, and it made Dave smile a little, knowing that taking his boyfriend to his show would make him happy. “Guess maybe we could go? Might be fun.” He said.
Blaine raised an eyebrow and looked up at Dave, trying to gauge whether or not he was actually interested in going to see the musical with him. It was probably the most him thing to do, something he loved probably more than anything besides actually being on stage- and he couldn't exactly invite Dave to perform somewhere with him. "It's set in 1899, based on the newsboy strike in New York City. It's like... about fighting against like, big business. Fighting for what's fair. And wanting more for yourself than what society says you can have. Or are worth," he explained. He wasn’t sure that the singing part was really going to draw Dave in, but maybe the storyline would. "Would you really wanna go with me?" It was a simple question, but he knew it was complicated decision. He was a little nervous to push Dave into things like that. "Because I," he put his free hand on his chest, "would love that."
Dave laughs at that, and his dad looks over at them, smiles as he shakes his head and looks back into the water. It made Dave grin a little harder, and he pulled on his line for something to do as the red crept to his cheeks. “It sounds interesting.” He admitted, thinking that maybe if all musicals had such an interesting story line, maybe he’d be more interested in them. “Yeah, suppose we could go. We should go.” He said, not really looking at Blaine, but knowing how happy he’d be to hear that he’d go along.
Blaine couldn't help the adoring look that melded onto his face as Dave said that he would go with him to see the musical. He hadn't really expected a yes, but it turned out he had one, and that was more than enough. He wished he could lean over and lean his head on his boyfriend's shoulder, even if it was just for a few seconds, to say thank you. Â "You're amazing," he whispered, sneaking his hand over between them where Paul couldn't see and just gently nudging him with a knuckle. It was the best physical thank you that he was going to manage right now.
Dave blushed and gave him a grin. He wasn’t sure he agreed with that statement, he wasn’t that great, and he could say he had a lot of flaws, but it was nice to hear that from Blaine. He had wished they could be more like a couple, but with his dad a few feet away, glancing at them from the corner of his eye, it made Dave nervous. “I am not. But I’m glad you think so.” He finally says, nudging him with his knee.
Blaine rolled his eyes. He liked that Dave was modest, but hated that he didn't see in himself what Blaine saw in him. It took a lot for someone who hated musicals to agree to go to one. Especially one as iconic as Newsies. It was really a treat for them to be able to go together, and it had Blaine almost giddy. He  smirked and nudged back with his own knee, just a tiny bit harder. Now he was playing.
Dave smirked and nudged him back with his shoulder, letting out a laugh. He liked playing around with Blaine, it felt comfortable and easy. Even with his dad standing near where they were sitting, he felt more confident that he usually did. “You stop or I’ll throw you in.” He teased, giggling freely, something he rarely did unless he was with family.
Blaine raised an eyebrow. He really didn't think that Dave would throw him into the lake, so he took the liberty of continuing with his playfulness. "You would not," he said, certainly, though it almost sounded, when he thought about it later, like a dare. It was hard not to love the way the other giggled with him too. He full on used his hand and pushed his boyfriend while letting out a laugh (that honestly sounded like a dare as well).
Dave smirked. “You think I won’t?” He laughed, setting his pole aside after Blaine pushed him, standing up and giving Blaine a daring look. “You’ll think when you need a towel.” He said before lifting Blaine easily from his spot on the dock, tossing him into the water with a laugh.
Blaine looked at Dave almost obstinately, a little smirk on his face until Dave put his fishing pole down. Blaine put his down too and he tried to get up but his boyfriend was too fast. He was laughing when the other picked him up, impressed that it took almost zero effort, but not expecting the feeling of weightlessness and the loss of those arms around him. His eyes went wide as he felt himself fall and he scrambled to quickly learn how to fly. Unfortunately he didn't learn to fly in the second it took for him to fall down, and he splashed into the water with a yelp, resurfacing a moment later and treading water. "Oh my god!"
Dave was bent over laughing on the dock at the look his boyfriend was giving him. His dad laughed beside him and called out to the boy in a teasing manner, “Hey Blaine, you look a little wet!” Their laughter died off and they watched Blaine tread water for a moment, still far enough out, before Paul spoke to his son, without looking at him. “He’s, uh...he’s not just your friend, is he?” He said softly for only Dave to hear. Dave could almost feel his heart rate speed up and a part of him just wanted to keep lying, but his dad had put his hand on Dave’s shoulder in assurance and Blaine was swimming to shore. And for some reason he didn’t feel so scared anymore. “No...no he’s not.” Was all he said before Blaine was approaching them again.
Blaine swam up to the shore of the lake, thankful that it was made of small pebbles and wasn't muddy- though it wouldn't have made much of a difference because he'd have to change anyway. Drenched, he waded up and paused to pointlessly ring some of his clothing out and shake out his hair as best as he could. Dave and his dad were going to have to see his Medusa hair. He made his way back to the dock where the other two stood talking and walked right up to his boyfriend. "I just need to share this with someone," he said, not hesitating and wrapping around him in a big bear hug so that he had to put up with being at least a little damp. "Do you know how gross that was?" he asked, a tiny smirk still on his face. It was evident that he wasn't actually angry.
Dave instinctively wrapped his arms around him and picked him up, “You wanna go in again?” He laughed, acting like he was going to throw him in again. He played around for a while and his dad stood by laughing and shaking his head, before Dave put him down, noticeably wet. “I’m not sorry.” He smirked, picking his pole back up and reeling it in. He supposed he was done fishing at this point and his dad looked about done too. “You got extra clothes, B?” Dave asked, stopping himself from using his new favorite name to call his boyfriend.
Blaine felt his heart race as Dave picked him up again. "No, no!" he shouted, though smiling and loving the other's playfulness as he tried to grip at his shirt. He really didn't want to be back in the lake, so he clung to the other as tightly as he could. His wet hair had already started to form the curls he tried so hard to tame and he felt like a wet poodle as Dave set him back down on the dock. "Don't worry, I'll get you back when you least expect it. I'm the youngest of four kids, I'm sneaky." It was a mostly empty threat, but it sounded good. "Um, I have an extra shirt and extra shorts, but I didn't think I would be going for a swim or anything," he replied, reaching for his bookbag and making sure it hadn't gotten wet. Him not having other clothing posed a new question. Where was he supposed to change and was he going to have to be smashed between his boyfriend and his boyfriends dad with no underwear?!
Dave shrugged and let Blaine look through his bag as he pulled out a towel from their own stuff. They always packed a towel or two just in case, since the Karaofskys liked to mess around in the water most times they went fishing. He felt back for Blaine now, as he was wet and he seemed a little distressed. He handed the other boy a towel as his dad began packing up their things. He grabbed the keys from the bag and handed them to Blaine as well. “You can change in the truck if you want. Just text me when you’re done....so we don’t walk in on you.” He blushed at that thought.
Blaine took they keys and towel and nodded carrying them, and his bookbag, to the truck, where he climbed inside and said a silent prayer that no one would be looking as he changed his clothing. It took way too long to get the wet clothing off and he dried himself off as best he could before putting his second pair of shorts on without any underwear and pulling the shirt over his head as well. He balled up his wet clothing and opened the door to the truck to jump out. "Can I put these back here?" he asked, motioning toward the truck bed. He wondered what Dave was thinking if he was thinking the same thing- Blaine was just naked in his truck.
Dave tried not to think of the fact that Blaine was just naked in his truck and picture that maybe one day it could be the two of them. He nodded and stepped aside to let Blaine put his things into the back next to the poles and other fishing supplies. He wondered then how long Blaine would stay after they got back, but knew that his parents were probably wanting him home at a decent time, since last week they were together a little later than normal, which made him blush as he opened the door of the truck to let Blaine inside before crawling in next to him.
