in borges's story the woman is sacrificed so that neither brother will kill the other, but i think this is slightly complicated in the movie adaptation. she's still murdered as a way to solve the relationship between the two, but i think it's ambiguous whether the problem was animosity or mutual desire. in the story it's pretty clear that the issue is the rivalry her presence stirs, but in the movie there's the added problem of the brothers' desire for each other. so was she killed because her presence stirred animosity or because she brought that hidden desire to the surface? the film does something different from the story by adding that complication. borges hated it because of the homosexual incest, but honestly it adds some interesting questions about the relationship between misogyny and homophobia.
