Leonidas had little to no recollection of the years directly following the incident. He remembered fire- lots and lots of fire- but very little else. Most of his memories were blurred at best, save for one.

Azeyma stood before him, a disappointed look on her face. “My child, what ails you?”

“You,” Leonidas’ voice was scratchy from lack of use.

“I did not think it normal for those to bite the hands that feed them,” Azeyma’s eyebrow quirked in amusement. “Should I have left you for dead?”

Leonidas remembered pondering that question. Would he have preferred no life to the life he led? Would it have been a mercy to allow him to perish in the fire? Or was her gift truly something good, something Leonidas should treasure?

Leonidas didn’t need long to decide.

“Yes,” he croaked. “I’m not your pawn.”

Azeyma’s amusement faded to a mixture of sadness and hurt. She opened her mouth to speak before closing it once more, frustration clear.
