#sawinelockdown Day 12 Tuesday 7 April: Hidden Gems 1. For this topic I have chosen to focus on 2 regions rather than on a specific wine. This first post is about the little town of Darling some 75km from Cape Town. Darling was named after Sir Charles Henry Darling who came to the Cape in 1851 as Lieutenant Governor. Darling is very well know for it’s wild flowers (Around September) and in days gone by was also know for making the best butter! Few people know that Darling also played a role in World War 2 at the height of the submarine menace when the SAAF put up an airfield for the aircraft that were patrolling the West Coast sea approaches to Cape Town. Darling Museum – Gives you a glimpse into life of a bygone era and the butter industy. #evitaseperron – The home of South Africa’s most famous white woman - Tannie Evita Bezuidenhout. #darlingbrew – Do a beer flight through a selection from the extensive range of craft beer and enjoy a meal. #darling_cellars – Award winning wines and tasty light meals. #cloofwines – Try the toffee and wine paring or request a sabrage demonstration and savour the MCC. #the_cloof_kitchen serves up great meals to accompany your tasting. #grootepost – Intimate tasting of exclusive wines and MCC. I have yet to try the restaurant, Hilda’s Kitchen, which comes highly recommended.
