Actions that show youth you care!
Did you know there are simple actions that build assets and show youth you care!
Ask them to help you!
Read with them!
Admire their skills when they say “watch me”.
Thank them!
Tell them how to act and how not to by showing them (practice what you preach).
Acknowledge their positive actions.
Set reasonable boundaries.
Congratulate their success (big and small)
Give them responsibilities and attention and good choices.
Laugh together!
Love them, no matter what!
Especially for parents of pre-teens and teens
Stay involved in your kids’ schooling during the middle school years- a time when most parents pull back.
Remember that young people watch what you do and listen to what you say (even if they don’t act like it) . You are a role model.
Get to know your children’s friends and make your home welcoming so that kids want to come to your home.
Be clear about your boundaries, values, and the reasons behind them.
Encourage them to choose friends who reinforce positive actions and to be that kind of friend to others.
Include youth in family decisions, such as what to serve for meals, who does what chores, and what to do on family fun nights.
Show through your words and actions that you value all young people.
