it has been a while since the last episode writeup, but i am back! i want to see what happens to my friend doggett today.Ā
so far, s9 has been largely disappointing, but iām trying not to write it off yet. there may still be some good things coming that i can enjoy, and then i can just pretend all the bad stuff never happened.
looks like doggett is in danger today!! and reyes must figure out what happened!! i love seeing those two together. so often doggett is the one finding someone in danger, so i look forward to the role-reversal.
(post-episode thoughts: i really liked this one! there's a lot to enjoy here, but the star of the show is the dynamic between reyes and doggett - i hope the rest of the season will play to that strength. it's an episode with minimal scully, but the fact that i remained invested is proof that the writing was good. this episode had light and silly moments followed by a very DARK villain of the week, which is a classic x files feature to me.
i think this episode is proof that the show can shine without mulder and with minimal scully - while they obviously make everything better, the secondary doggett/reyes relationship is its own fascinating thing (with echoes of MSR's believer/skeptic dynamic - but thankfully, it is not a carbon copy, or else i'd be boooored).
i know the overall vibe of what happens through the rest of the season mytharc-wise (it is pretty much impossible to dodge spoilers after over a year of running this blog, making friends, and searching for fic, but i am still trying, especially in relation to IWTB and the revival!), so i think it is worth handing the episodes that succeed their flowers, and in doing so we can glimpse into a perhaps sweeter alternate universe where that quality carried forth into the rest of the OG run.)

we openā¦ with a guy (later revealed to be named lukesh). he picks up a magazine. reyes is there too, acting casual. does she have her hair up?? cool! we never get to see her like that šš„°
doggett sees all of this going down, and he knows who this man we are watching is: ā50 bucks says thatās lukesh. 100 says he knows weāre hereā
doggett wants to ātake himā while reyes isā¦ fixing a bike? undercover queen! but the other agent heās with says he has to wait. UGH, itās BRAD!!! i forgot about brad. how blissful was the period of time in which brad was not in my brain! why tf is brad using reyes as a trapā¦? he's a sick freak.
doggett doesn't WANT to wait because lukesh cuts womenās tongues out (gross! but i think this is an interesting callback to season 1's young at heart, where mulder confronts the consequences of waiting to shoot. i would love to have seen that explored more, along with the often joked about fear of fire. there's some good stuff that gets mentioned once and then never again)
but brad does what brad wants. ohhh, and he claims reyes volunteered to be the bait in this trap. alright then. i guess i can hate him slightly less... if he is telling the truth.
our villain lukesh goes to open the mailbox 4-D (gasp... they said the episode's title) ... but where did he go?? reyes approaches. doggett says āmonica, donātā, but brad wants her to follow himā¦. literally most evil things in this world come from his hand.
lukesh goes into an apartmentā¦ reyes lost sight of himā¦ AND THEN SHE SCREAMS
DOGGETT IS GONNA RUN RUN RUN RUN!!
NOOOOOOO, HE FINDS REYES WITH HER MOUTH ALL BLOODYā¦. he mumbles āoh no, no, noā and brad calls for help. who tells doggett that lukesh has the gun from reyes!!!
doggett does not give a fuuuuck about any gun this lukesh guy might have. he is following him and he is gonna shoot. āturn around, you son of a bitchā ohhhhhhhā¦.. doggett is gonna fuck him up. and i support it!
lukesh turns around. his hands are dripping in blood. a police car approaches. he smirks. and then he is gone. (creepy music)
doggett is alone in an alleyā¦ but then lukesh is behind him!!! NOOOOO, AND HE FIRES!!!!

i feel confident that doggett is going to pull through because this is episode 4 of the season and they don't have mulder. let's use context clues.

she gets to the hospital and runs into brad. i donāt like the way heās touching reyes. brad wants to know why doggett was in that alley, while reyes tries to explain he was with her in her apartment, which iām sure brad is going to take VERY well.Ā
SCULLY IS HERE!! and she tells reyes she is so sorryā¦ if he pulls through this, it is likely he will be paralyzed for life. she whispers it. like if you say it softly enough, the words will hurt lessā¦
iām confused as to what tf is going on, but also i am very intrigued. which is a good sign.
reyes is baffled. āi havenāt understood one single word iāve heard since i got here. whoever youāre talking about, itās not john doggettā
scully takes him into the hospital room, where doggett is very much tied up to a billion tubes with a neck brace. she grabs his hand. scully must be getting flashbacks to mulderā¦ because she looks down.Ā
reyes has a big ring on her hand, which could mean nothing, but is still interesting to note. she starts to cry.Ā

at the ballistics lab, skinner is analyzing a bullet. skinner claims it did not come from doggettās weapon. it doesnāt match and it wasnāt fired.
OHHHH, BRAD PULLS SKINNER ASIDE and says he wants timely communication. heās had the bullet for an hour or two and didnāt tell himā¦ oh, brad is freaked. or is he?? i donāt trust him. maybe he set doggett up.
he orders skinner to run the bullet through the database of FBI weapons. skinner thinks this is stupid, but must comply.
reyes is waiting outside doggettās roomā¦ scully is here, too. āhe was with me, dana, in my apartmentāĀ (i know reyes always calls her "dana", which is a fascinating choice, but it always throws me. i suppose that is the point, however)
scully confesses that she saw something onceā¦. OH, SHE TALKS ABOUT SEEING HER DAD THE NIGHT HE DIED. āi like to believe he came to say goodbye. a visitationā āi think thatās wonderful- a blessing- but thatās not what happened to meā reyes is very firm.

also? huge of scully to open up about that. i've always maintained that scully's journey from disbelief to belief started wayyy earlier than people give her credit for. a rare writing w on this show.

skinner assures her he does not believe she did it - but it doesnāt matter what he believes. there are holes in bradās story, anyway; for instance, she was at home at the time skinner called her, and she never fired her gun even though the bullet matches perfectly.
she asks about the eyewitness and skinner says they canāt discuss that. rules generally havenāt stopped them before, butā¦ i guess now they do since brad is putting them all on a leash.
doggettās finger is twitching!! scully is trying to figure out if he is awake. shine that flashlight in his eye!! (that could not have been fun to film)

scully, brad, and skinner are all watching her. i hate brad. donāt tell her to try and take it easy!!! and you donāt have monica privileges.Ā
she picks up her stuffā¦ and lukesh grabs her!!! he rips the earpiece out!! he starts whispering in her ear about how she must want to scream!! holds a razor up to her throatā¦
scully notices she is goneā¦ scully doesn't care for brad saying it isnāt possible for lukesh to have slipped past them. she is going in!!
lukesh is crying, saying she ruined everything. heās crying into her shoulder. āthis time, i get to bleed you slowā JEEZ š«Ø
BANG! brad jumps in and shoots lukesh in the head. one point for him. but only one point, because he cannot comfort her to save his life. he comes towards her, asks if she is okay, grabs her head, says "itās okay, itās over", then dips while she is very visibly NOT doing well. brad. you just donāt get it. that was a comical interaction. he basically said "get over itš" lmaoĀ
after all of that, reyes goes back to doggett's room in the hospital. she shuts the door and locks it behind her. is she going to unplug him? she grabs his handā¦ rubs her own over it. switches the alarms off. slowlyā¦. she flicks the switch. with tears in her eyes. this is so SAD!! iām so sad and she is crying. she sets his hand down.Ā
then she opens her eyes. sheās back in her apartment. LIKE IT NEVER HAPPENED. sheās crying, and he wants to know what is wrong?? why did you just go to get a plate and then start crying?? she pulls him in for a hug. heās asking what is wrong, gently, in her ear. she says sheās good.Ā
oh my god.

imagine being doggett and you turn around and reyes is looking at you like you just returned from the dead. and youāre like um... do you not want the sausage thenā¦
so lukesh is gone then, right?!Ā from both universes?!
gotta rewind again. need to relive that.
she hugs him and she sighs and he whispers āmonica, whatās wrong?ā and looks so confusedā¦.
wowza. that was a killer episode. iām pleased!!
but also sad for reyes, because no one is ever going to know what she went through!!! imagine having to nearly get murdered and pull the plug on your friend and then act like it NEVER HAPPENED because it didn't to anyone else but you. that is WILD. what a grief to carry.
and i'm also sad for the parallel universe that lost their doggett :(
at a certain point in this episode, i was feeling kind of ship of theseus about this show - like, you take away the mulder and then the scully from the mulder and scully show, and is it still the show you started with? and while the answer is basically no, itās a different beast with different dynamics, at the same time it felt very traditionally x files with the balance of heart and suspense and using the scary beast of the week to analyze our characters. so iām very happy.
itās good to know that there is still a capacity for that quality. now, of course, i wonāt expect another banger of this caliber for a while, but still!! it can be done!! and while i would always appreciate more scully, itās reassuring to know that it can be a satisfying journey even if she is only there for a few moments because we have come to know these new characters well enough to feel their strength on their own.
needless to say, i am fascinated by the doggett and reyes dynamic. do i hope they kiss? yeah. guilty as charged. but even if they donāt, whatever tf they have going on is verrrrry interesting. i wonder if being with her always subtly reminds him of his son's death since she was brought in to help with that case and it seems that is how they have met. what a wild way to begin knowing someone who becomes a very dear friend.
doggett is such a good guy... bringing her sausage, cracking jokes while he can't even speak because he wants her to feel better... and reyes is so sweet to him, shaving his face, joking back with him š what an experience to endure on your own!! i wonder if she would ever try and explain it to him.
very fucked up villain today, which is good, because the last villain had potential but didn't live up to it. part of me wanted them to explain how the was able to jump through universes/dimensions, but in the end i'm glad they didn't, because i end up getting distracted by how silly the reasons for why certain MOTWs have their powers are. thinking of pusher being able to control people because of his brain tumor. sometimes not knowing is better š
well, i am happy for now, all things considered. i still think they should have ended the show with s8, but i'm glad that if they decided not to, there can be a few highlights. (shakes my fist at the "mulder leaves" plot for being looming in the background and preventing me from fully relaxing and embracing this episode)
