Remix from DJ Doo Wops excellent 95 Live mixtape. Not sure if this was a b-side or white label. More then anything Biggie represents that time period of rap music. There was no underground or mainstream. Nobody complained about content. All that mattered was if it was good or not. Or maybe that just how I remember it. Or maybe as time passes we stop focusing on trivial things and focus on what matters. Biggies music has proven to be timeless. Biggie took a simple formula and did it perfectly. Plenty of rappers have copied his style. They dress like him, kick the rags to riches hustler anthems, talk about the cruel reality of urban poverty and celebrating the rise out of it. But none of them could match his rap style, nobody could hit the details, nobody could pull off punch lines like "you look so fine I'd suck on your daddies dick" without sounding ridiculous and could pull it altogether flawlessly. I often think about Biggie dying just two months short of 25 years old. When I was that age my life had barely started. I had only been out of college for one year, I hadn't even met my wife, I hadn't started my master program and I had just moved into my city of residence. At 24 my life hadn't even started while for Christopher Wallace he had already lived two lifetimes. A stint in jail, a daughter, moving to another state to sell drugs, an underground rap career, a classic album, world tour, a marriage, a very public falling out with a once close friend, a son, wealth, super stardom, a near fatal car accident ect. And then in an instance, 16 years ago, it all ended. I love the music Biggie made, I wish he was still here. I wish he was here to make every guest appearances an event like Andre 3000 or to drop a new album every few years and blow everyone away like Jay-Z and Nas. Mostly I just wished we could have heard his idea's and his observations as he got older. How would BIG have felt if he saw 9/11? What type of punchlines could he make about the recession? How would he have felt to see a black president? How would he feel about turning 40? Sadly will never have that. Instead we get this small collection of songs. Two full length albums. A few unreleased jonts and remix's. Some vocals pasted onto other rappers songs that Big was never around to see become famous. But I want to thank BIG. He died when I was in 7th grade. Today I'm almost 30. But what little music he did make has been a constant throughout my lifetime. I can hear songs like The What, Machine Gun Funk, Kick in the Door, Sky's the Limit, Respect, Last Days, Brooklyn's Finest, Get Money, I Love the Dough, Victory, Long Kiss Goodnight or Things Done Changed and I get taken back to moments in my life listening to BIG in my first car, in my bedroom, in my dorm, on my laptop, in a club, on my headphones, in MN, in NJ, in New York City. Last night I was driving home from Long Island. DJ Cipha Sounds was doing his mix show and started playing a slew of Biggie songs in tribute. I was going 75 MPH down the L.I.E into Queens watching the sun set with my beautiful wife sleeping in the passenger seat to my right and the cities greatest rapper that had ever lived streaming out of the speakers. In that moment it was as if time and space did not exist and I was hearing these songs that I knew all the words to for the first time. It was fitting to have an artist that was constantly striving for perfection provide a single moment that felt so perfect. Thank you Christopher Wallace. Rest in peace and rest in power.

From the Doo Wop 95 Live mixtape. Happy 39th bornday anniversary, BIG!
Ol' Dirty Bastard - Brooklyn Zoo (Doo Wop - 95 Live mixtape version)
A certified hip hop classic and my favourite joint from Return To The 36 Chambers, presented here in 1995 mixtape form (with alternative delivery by the late, great Russell Jones). ODB edits = GOLD. And I love the "brand new!" shout. Takes me back to all those late nights in the mid-90s spent listening to college radio in order to record the latest tracks to come out from the East (ah, the warmth of analog tapes). Bring it on back!
