“wrong. my expectations are extremely accurate,” her arms crossed over her chest, trying to hold a stern expression despite her urge to smile. it was an urge she experienced every single time she found herself talking to the dancer. miyeon was her best friend, and she might be slightly biased on the topic, but she liked to believe that anything was possible if the younger just put her mind to it. she just needed a little push to get her going, and mina was more than happy to offer her services. “you’re not even trying,” she argued, leaning back in her seat as she stared her friend down. while miyeon and the rest of the company seemed content with her lack of, well, overall talent, mina believed that her friend had all the potential she needed to improve. the hard part was convincing her to try, to get out of that hole she’s always been stuck in. “your vocals are weak now, but practice really does help. i want to actually hear your voice in the next pandora song! these exercises helped me with my vocals, so i’m sure they’ll help you.”
nine times out of ten, miyeon’s confidence was through the roof. her entire life, she’d been fed various levels of lies and truths about how pretty, talented and useful she was. according to her parents, she could do no wrong, and she had plenty of suitors that felt the same, even after she’d scorned them. when it came to being an idol, however, that unstoppable confidence was nowhere to be found. sure, being pretty made a lot of things easier, but it was never enough to cover up the fact that she was the weakest link in pandora. gorgeous selfies yielded plenty of compliments, but also exposed her to plenty of people wondering when she’d be the next member to take a departure, and questioning why she was added in the first place. even for someone as egotistical as her, it got to be a bit demotivating at times. “i mean, what’s the point of trying?” she asked, forcing laughter in an attempt to diffuse the mood. she appreciated mina’s support as one of the only cheerleaders she had, but she couldn’t find it in herself to muster up that same energy. “i trained for like... forever. and i’m still here. i’m okay with my voice not being heard. as long as i’m still getting endorsements to keep me busy, they can use me or not use me as much as they want. there’s always going to be one member that gets next to nothing and i’d rather it not be any of the other girls. they don’t deserve that.”
