i hope that this fleeting desire to record my thoughts, feelings, and experiences as i begin postgraduate study for the first time might last a little longer than my other attempts at keeping journals. it would be nice to be able to read through these early entries at the end (or start) of a (hopefully) fulfilling and worthwhile academic pursuit and laugh at myself. like most of my attempts at such things it will likely be flimsy and haphazard but maybe i should accept that that’s okay. why feel guilt over something like forgetting to maintain a journal? it’s okay because i’m living and remembering and reflecting in other ways all the time. ha - sounds like i’m giving up before i’ve begun - no, just trying to let myself off the hook since i don’t truly know yet what i’m in for.
meeting my primary supervisor for the first time on thursday morning, she sounds lovely in emails and i hope desperately that we have a good working relationship - it can be hard to work if there’s something out of sync between us. surprised at how much i would like to impress her and how much it would mean to me if i discover her to be willing to take me under her wing. would like her to offer to introduce me to people and i hope that i can build some really good relationships at the uni here but i have to remember that these take work and that i’ll have to be willing to make myself feel vulnerable if i’m going to build relationships. worth stating my goals at the outset: build community, build knowledges, collaborate, listen, feel, feed the in-breath, don’t stress too much about the out-breath yet. look for opportunities and openings and create them where there weren’t any before. write. write. read more. honour processes and methodology rather than content: the process is the end in itself. honour ambiguity. be good to people and work always in good faith. don’t let people take advantage and don’t work for free.Â
