A R E V I V A L U N R E A L I S E D ? I'm on record in saying that @eminem is one of my favorite emcees of all time & one of my biggest inspirations along with lyricists such as Lupe Fiasco, Pharoahe Monch, Elhzi & Nas as far as technical emcees go. During an era that saw the release of #TheMarshallMathersLP, #TheEminemShow and the #8MileSoundtrack, you couldn't convince me that there was a mainstream rapper better than Marshall Bruce Mathers III. His verse on Biggie's "Dead Wrong" may be one of the best cameos ever & there was a song I wish I wrote myself, it would be "Lose Yourself". With that said, his incredible ability as a wordsmith that has arguably only sharpened with age, but another artistic element that made him phenomenal has diminished a bit in recent times His songwriting ability #EMINEM in his prime not only put together brilliant cadences & rhyme schemes, he also created great songs with outstanding production that that included those breathtaking flows. #RECOVERY was probably the last album that showed off that balance, since then, a lot of EM'S material has suffered at hands of either his determination to prove that he can out rhyme everyone, his unfortunate production choices or a bit of both. #REVIVAL continues that trend & it's a shame because it undermines its potential to be great. When I first heard this album, I thought it was borderline 'trash' & I stated as much on my FB page. Truthfully speaking, "REVIVAL" isn't complete trash, not with great songs like the repentant "Arose", the thought provoking "Castle", the Slim Shady-esque "Framed", the top notch verses on "Untouchable" and the amazing "River" with Ed Sheeran However, generic pop attempts, "Like Home", questionable & offensive rap-rock like "Remind Me" and overcooked records like "Chloraseptic" & "Offended" help make this a subpar effort from Eminem, and truthfully, #HipHop deserves more from a 45 year old who still has a phenomenal skillset and a unique set of life experiences. Let's hope that he nails it on his next go round Written by Jason Andre Roberts aka CONQUEST
