I recently got asked my top 5 NES games. I was not a big NES player as a kid but a few games have grown on me.
Honorable mentions first : Kid Icarus (even though i don't like shoot 'em ups) Ninja Gaiden (played it more on Turbo grafx) I really thought about Renegade, Bionic Commando, Mario, Popeye, Bubble Bobble, Donkey Kong, Karnov, Ghosts'n Goblins and Tetris but I played them more on other systems (C64, Arcade, Game Boy). Also Super Bat Puncher but it is just a demo.
Okay in order coming in at
 5. River City Ransom, I only found out about this game in 2007 or so. I love the graphical style and the humour.
4. Ninja-kun Majou no Bouken, I did not want to include arcade ports but I have played this a lot on the NES. Weird jump controls but addictive when you get used to it.
3. The Legend of Zelda, So well designed. SNES version is my favourite though,
2. Metroid, like Zelda great exploration and a good story that you can sort of imagine more about.
1. Castlevania!!! No surprise here. I include Dracula's Curse (CV3) and the Japanese version of it. All sort of the same game to me and I love them equally.
Just saw this over on geekologie and thought, well it is donkey kong, that's cool.
