"Social" quests in RPGs can be delightful if done right.
In Neverwinter Nights 2 by Obsidian, your character gets framed for a mass murder at one point, and your task is not only collect evidence proving you didn't do it, but also defend yourself in court.
And when you try to, you get all the social skills play out (or fail) like diplomacy, intimidation, etc. A bard could distract the judges with a cautionary tale. A criminal could get a false witness testifying they had been in their company when the murder had taken place. The trial could be an intellectual duel or a charade, and many factors depend on how people perceive you, how much evidence you could find, how good you are at the talkative side of DnD skills. You could win or you could lose.
And the best part that your accuser is very determined to have you hanged. When you use a diplomacy skill to pass the skill check, there's no immediate notification whether it was success or failure. You don't see it immediately. You try to prove yourself against a very skilled manipulator, and the experience is extremely enjoyable.
And what I personally love about this moment in the game is how it affects your companions, especially when you're challenged to spill your blood in a trial by combat when the hearing is over.
When you see Khelgar, a dwarf who's been with you just for the love of fights and messes, realising how injust the whole situation is, how your good name is covered in blood of the innocent people you've never hurt - storming in eager to take your place and defend you to his last breath, this what good writing is about.
I wish video games did it more often.
CRPG players, do you think your character would make a good companion in another run of their respective game?
