Miss Rosen writes: In March 1979, photographer Tom Warren traveled to NYC to visit a few friends. Their roommate had just bought a loft in Soho and needed someone to do demo and construction. “I took a look on my second day, got the job and never left,” he says. “I just loved it. I came from Cleveland, which was very different. I couldn’t spend the day walking down the street and going to see cutting edge contemporary art. In New York, it was right here on my doorstep.” By day, Warren photographed paintings at Sotheby’s and by night, he let loose in the burgeoning E. Village art scene. Inspired by the people he encountered, he began taking large-format portraits in the tradition of Mike Disfarmer, chronicling the extraordinary cast of characters he met along the way. In 1980, Warren set up his first Portrait Studio at his Broome Street studio before taking it on the road — setting up shop in some of the era’s most influential art spaces including ABC No Rio, Semaphore Gallery, Fashion MODA, Gracie Mansion, and PS 1. Although Warren didn’t think of his work as a form of performance art, the artists he photographed often brought that to the work — transforming the very straightforward portraits into a collaborative dance between photographer and subject. In [this book] Warren brings together some of the most influential artists of the time including Peter Hujar, Keith Haring, Marilyn Minter, Sur Rodney Sur, John Fekner, and Jimmy De Sana to create a veritable who’s who of the New York avant-garde. …With the advent of AIDS, many of the people Warren photographed would pass before their time, his portraits becoming memorials to talents never fully realized. But for a brief moment, they ruled the NY art world and paved the way for a new era. 'Frank Horvat: Side Walk' is back in stock from @hatjecantzverlag⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ From 1979 to 1986, the city of New York functioned as a kind of refuge for photographer Frank Horvat (1928–2020). Born in present-day Croatia, for years Horvat lived and worked rather nomadically, traveling extensively through Asia and Europe on photojournalist excursions with a brief stopover in Paris where he shot fashion photography for Jardins de Mode and Elle. Eventually he found himself in New York; during this period, he allowed himself to surrender to the daily hustle and bustle of the city streets. In between commissions, Horvat created a prolific series of photography and writing that was not intended for public consumption, instead functioning as a reflection upon his own craft as well as the significance of photography itself.⁠⁠ ⁠⁠ 'Frank Horvat: Side Walk' publishes many of these photographs for the first time alongside the photographer’s writing. The elegant presentation of this clothbound volume is representative of the great pride that Horvat took in the creation of his personal projects as well as his professional pursuits: the photojournalist's texts are published on thin Munken offset paper and his photographs are printed on deep matte photo paper. The book displays historical ephemera—including homemade flyers for performances at iconic clubs—along with the artist’s paintings. Additionally, an essay on the “Glamorous Life” by Jarrett Earnest explicates the thematic concerns of the catalog. In the style of fellow Boston School artists Nan Goldin, Jack Pierson and Mark Morrisroe, he chronicled the zeitgeist with a raw, diaristic approach. In his work, dizzying visuals of nightlife and its cast of characters accompany affectionate portraits of his friends; seedy glamour and high camp meet in a jubilant fusion of collage, paintings and photography. Not one to be an aloof observer, Tabboo! was often photographed himself—by Goldin, Morrisroe, Pierson, Steven Meisel, Steven Klein, David Armstrong and Philip-Lorca diCorcia.
