The context of why basically every major Sonic character was created is pretty obvious (i.e, Sonic's attitude as a contrast to Mario's, Eggman from a Nature v Industry theme, many characters to facilitate specific gimmicks in their games of origins). The exception, i feel, is Knuckles. Why is Knuckles. What about Sonic 3 (&Knuckles) in specific made them go, yeah, this is like, the exact character this story needs? It perplexes me.
Well with Knuckles you've sort of got the contrast between him and Sonic, right? He's red to Sonic's blue. He's as strong as Sonic is fast (official statement, for as much sense as it makes lol), which manifests in gameplay via his breaking down boulders just by running into them and stuff. Sonic is a free spirit, explores everywhere and goes wherever the wind takes him. Knuckles is duty-bound to one singular place, guarding the Master Emerald above all else. Freedom versus obligation. That sort of idea.
Some of that stuff is more obvious in retrospect compared to when 3&K initially released, but it's all there. Also as a general statement 3&K was to be the biggest title in the series at this point and they hadn't gone a single game without introducing a new furry friend - and whereas Tails is a sidekick that's gonna follow Sonic through his entire journey, Knuckles is a rival figure, and he's not gonna go on the same adventure that Sonic did - so his gameplay and means of traversal all intentionally put him on a different, slower path and stuff.
One other quick thing to mention is that every future rival Sonic has (as well as Metal Sonic who predates Knuckles) serve to challenge Sonic on his speed, which is ofc his most iconic character trait. Knuckles doesn't even attempt to. He's not a mirror of Sonic. He's his opposite instead. That, I would say, is the purpose of Knuckles.

Pretty good one today! Marshall Cahill, the director of a research institute, murders today's victim to protect his own son from correctly being outed for plagiarism. Columbo snoops, a lot. There's actually quite a bit more evidence than usual in this case, less Columbo outwitting people (although still there in spades) and more genuinely piecing together disparate bits of information to solve the case. It's good stuff. Lots of Dog appearances too, always fun. The gotcha scene is surprisingly emotional as well, Columbo so confidently incorrect only to reveal it was a trap in the first place, all banking on Cahill genuinely wanting to protect his son - I quite enjoyed it. Hated the robot though, thank god it wasn't actually part of the gotcha in any real way.
Maon is so cute
Panzy is like the third prominent Toriyama girl I can think of that likes tinkering with machines, I feel like he had a type of some sort. Once again though a pretty good episode, I wouldn't say Daima's hit its stride necessarily since that's still a ceiling of like a 7/10 and I want it to hit higher, but we've definitely found our footing by now. We'll see how it goes from here.

I've been wanting to attach the midcards every single time and kept on forgetting so here's me doing my due dilligence for once. Probably the most okay episode so far in that most of it is actually action for once, and there's even some decent semblance of screentime for our lead characters as well. Crazy.
