Chris Rock - Obama having a Black wife and issues on interracial dating.
I think that Chris Rock is one of the funniest people alive. Given that one of my favorite shows is The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, it can’t be hard to believe that my favorite type of humor is political (and very, very liberal). Chris Rock is great because his jokes are highbrow, just as The Daily Show and Saturday Night Live are great because they provide social and political commentary that you have to be up to date on current events to follow (mixed in, of course, with the lowbrow @SNL). This particular video of Chris Rock is a wonderful standup bit of Rock doing what he does best.
Right from the beginning, he uses situational irony, since it’s so unexpected for him to say that Barack Obama, a self-identifying black man, can’t be president because he has a black wife. I think that it’s fair for me to laugh at this video because it pokes fun at the stereotypes of both black women and white women. Rock uses the mechanical theory by repeating the punchline of not being able to have a black first lady. This also fulfills the benign violation theory because it’s not socially acceptable to say that a black man needs a white girl to be president. I guess we could say that it uses the superiority theory, since black and white women probably feel superior to the black and white women that Chris Rock makes fun of, since they are extremes. The incongruity theory is definitely present, since a lot of his jokes are unexpected (starting from the idea that a black man can’t be president with a black wife).
Chris Rock has picked up some criticism from people who say that he is perpetuating stereotypes about black people, and it’s a fair criticism, given the sheer number of people who watches his comedy. Still, I think it’s worth noting that comedy is one of the few times that people of different races can directly address those stereotypes without closing up upon hearing about race. Sometimes comedy can cross a line. I don’t think that this video does.
