she's very clearly not yelling, despite how much she wants to most of the time she talks to shauna lately. it would be so easy to lash out like she might've done back at home, even just a few months ago, but it doesn't feel like an option anymore. she was chosen as their leader because, apparently, she's the right person for the job— and while nat still doesn't know if there's any truth to that, she's at least doing the best job she can for the sake of everyone else here, even if it wouldn't have been her choice in the first place. that means she doesn't get the luxury of lashing out on people, she doesn't get to be the one fighting; she should be mediating, but every day, shauna makes that a whole lot harder, and she's starting to fear she's closer to her breaking point.

❝ okay. ❞ the word is drawn out, overly calm, quiet, as if to prove a point as she glares back at her. ❝ i'm not trying to— ❞ no, it feels fucking pointless to try to defend herself, when she's sure that shauna knows she's not trying to do that, that she's just trying to get a rise out of her instead. so she takes a deep breath, quickly shaking her head. ❝ i just think you could, you know, go a little easier on her. ❞ she hates the way it sounds like she's some fucking elementary school teacher. maybe this is why jackie made the best captain after all, she never had shame for that.

🍃 she's given it a few days to plan her move, hoping that @6utchery might come to her first and tell her what's going on, but that's not exactly how their friendship's ever really been, anyway. it's always one of them catching what's going on with the other before they're ready to talk about it and speaking it out loud before the other gets the chance, but tai's been patient this time, in case shauna needed the space, or in case she still hasn't figured out what's going on with her and melissa yet. but since she's seeing the blonde emerging from shauna's hut every day for a week now, she's decided she can't wait any longer, she needs something to understand where shauna's head is really at with it all.

today's the day, she finally makes her way towards shauna as the two come from her hut, casually side stepping in front of melissa to make it clear she's going to talk to shauna without her, but she gives her a small nod of acknowledgment before urging her away, then turning her head to shauna. ❝ hey, ❞ she says, eyes narrowing in on her as she tries to choose her words carefully. ❝ so, you've.... got a roommate, ❞ she notes, her tone in the form of a question, hoping that shauna will correct her, tell her what this really is.

he wishes he could say the same, be the guy who always pretended he never cared what people thought of him. instead, he's always been the person who let other people's opinions weigh too heavily on him, letting the rumors and the nicknames and the cold stares infect his own self worth. it's not that it's gotten worse out here, it's just turned into more than high school bullying — a constant battle of life of death, where he can't resort to the same tactics of self defense he used to use back at home, because if they all decide they don't need him, he'll end up just like his brother.

it makes him wonder if she's telling the truth— if she really doesn't care or if she's pretending she doesn't, like he used to, because his only defense back then was anger, fighting when he didn't need to, provoking others before they could provoke him. is that what she's doing now?

he's got no grounds to defend her, because it seems like that's not even what she's looking for, anyway, so he takes a different approach. ❝ okay, ❞ he says quietly, slowly looking back up to her. ❝ so what do you think? ❞ he asks, because he actually does care about her opinion just as he cares about her, even if he's never said that directly. ❝ are you one? ❞ it's not spoken in an accusation, only curious to know how she really feels about it, testing the waters so he actually knows how to respond to her.

'us' — the word brings her a rush of adrenaline, solidifying something for her that she's always too weary to ask her directly. what are we? it's so high school, worrying about labels and what all of this means and what they are to each other, but when shauna calls them an us, it validates melissa's own feelings enough to find comfort in what they have without seeking any concrete definition, one she didn't imagine she was going to get from shauna, anyway. and it's written on her face, the way she lights up, brows raised, eyes wide, a smile tugging at her lips, telling shauna she's getting exactly what she wanted to get out of melissa: complete devotion, a willing participant in whatever horrible plan she wants next.

❝ so we shouldn't trust anyone else. ❞ it's not a question, even though it's almost spoken as one, as if she's asking shauna for some kind of permission to rely on her. maybe there's a part of melissa that knows she's stupid for putting her full faith in shauna, but there's another part of her that doesn't care about any of the risks she's taking with her, because it'll be worth it, just to be with her, to feel what it's like to be that close to her power. she glances towards nat's hut with a scoff. ❝ they're all listening to you, you know. even if she doesn't realize it yet. they're following your lead. ❞ her eyes look back to her slowly as she grins, because she's going to make sure they all do.
