5 March 1944. Killed in action while dogfighting, 5 March 1944 (aged 32) over Wewak, Territory of New Guinea. P-47 pilot Colonel Neel Kearby. First USAAF fighter pilot to receive the Medal of Honour. With 22 air victories, he was the top-scoring P-47 pilot in the Pacific Theatre.
