Pilot Major Allen J. Seward and co-pilot Lieutenant Jack Lee were killed during the attack, and one engine caught fire. Colonel LaVerne Saunders ditched the aircraft 50 km (31 mi) from Tonolei near a small island.
An Australian coastwatcher spotted them three hours later. The crew returned safely to Guadalcanal
