Y/N didnât know how long she had been lying there, listening to the steady pace of a heart monitor and her motherâs breathing. Yet, she hadnât made a single noise; she hadnât made any move to wake her mother up or called for a doctor. She had simple looked up at the ceiling, blinking slowly, trying to stop thinking, trying to stop seeing everything that passed through her mind. Trying to forget.
Taking a sharp deep breath, her hand that wasnât wrapped in a cast moved across her ribs, holding them as she struggled to breath. She really didnât know how long she had been here.
âYou know he wonât be gone for very long, right dad?â That was James, she knew her brothers voice anywhere.
âAt least he went home to shower.â That was her dad, Y/N almost started to cry. âLuke has sat by her bed for nearly a week straight. I donât actually know if heâs slept at all.â
Y/N heard the heart monitor next to her pick up, giving her away as her mother shot up, eyes looking around wild before landing on Y/N. Y/N took one look at her mother and could see everything, could see just how broken she looked. Her father and brother running into the room, what looked like food and water in hand.
âMum?â Y/N cried silently, trying and failing to reach for her mother.
âBaby.â Her mother cried. âOh god, my baby.â
âGet a doctor James.â Her father nudged her brother who stood shocked.
âMumâŚâ Y/N tried again, trying to sit. âI canât move. Why canât⌠why am i?â
âShhh, itâs okay baby.â Her mother soothingly stroked her hair back. âItâs okay.â
âWhy canât I move?â Y/N whispered as she looked at her father, his eyes giving everything he was feeling away.
I was broken. Ran through Y/Nâs head as she closed her eyes, tears sailing down her cheeks, rivers of emotions she didnât want to feel.
âMum. Dad.â Jamesâ voice broke. âThe doctor needs to check her over. We can come back in after sheâs finished.â
James stayed a distance away from Y/N, which was not like him. He watched her carefully and yet never moved closer than three feet from the bed Y/N was bound in.
âWeâll be right outside, sweetheart.â Her father kissed her forehead, grabbing her motherâs hand and he moved her. âCome on, love.â
With a small lingering kiss to her forehead, Y/N watched as her family moved out of the small white room she lay in. She watched as the door shut and finally her eyes came to the doctor standing in her room.
âMiss Y/L/N. Itâs good to see you awake.â She spoke, moving to sit on the seat her mother once sat. âIâm Doctor Jen.â
âHi.â Y/N nodded, her good hand across her stomach again.
âAre you in pain?â Dr Jen asked.
âOnly when I breath.â Y/N tried to smile, wincing in pain instead.
âThat would be the broken ribs. Iâll up your dosage as you heal now your awake.â Dr Jen smiled kindly, sitting her clipboard on the bed by Y/Nâs heavy casted hand.
âWhatâs wrong with me? Why canât I move my legs?â Y/N asked, wanting to know the bad now.
âUmâŚâ Dr Jen looked her board then back to Y/N. âYou were in a car accident, and you hit a tree.â
âI know what happened. Whatâs wrong with me?â Y/N snapped at her before taking a painful deep breath. âSorry.â
âPlease donât feel like you have to apologise..â Dr Jen smiled before she kept talking. âYou suffered a mild concussion, a broken arm and torn muscles and ligaments in your shoulder. Youâve also damaged nerves in your lower back, causing a spinal injury.â She spoke.
âWill I walk?â Y/N asked.
âRight now I canât say. Youâve been in a coma for a little over a week. We will have to do some test, but you seem like a strong one.â Dr Jen smiled.
âAnd my boy-â Y/N cleared her throat. âThe guy who was driving the car?â
âTom?â Dr Jen looked back to her slip board, flipping a few pages. âHe had a minor concussion, a broken nose and a broken arm.â She looked back to Y/N. âHe was released 3 days ago.â
âAre you going to start the test now?â Y/N asked, a slight quiver in her voice.
âIâm just going to see how your vitals are right now and then I will come back a little later when youâre properly awake and we can do a full test.â Dr Jen nodded.
With a small nodded and a mumbled okay, Y/N moved through the check quickly before her mother and father came back into the room. When she asked about Jamesâ, her parents told her he had gone home to get her a fresh change of clothes and necessities. But Y/N couldnât shake that something was wrong.
Before Y/N was about to drift back off to sleep, her door opened again. Thinking it was James, she was ready to change. What she saw though wasnât James.
