Y/N didn’t know how long she had been lying there, listening to the steady pace of a heart monitor and her mother’s breathing. Yet, she hadn’t made a single noise; she hadn’t made any move to wake her mother up or called for a doctor. She had simple looked up at the ceiling, blinking slowly, trying to stop thinking, trying to stop seeing everything that passed through her mind. Trying to forget.
Taking a sharp deep breath, her hand that wasn’t wrapped in a cast moved across her ribs, holding them as she struggled to breath. She really didn’t know how long she had been here.
“You know he won’t be gone for very long, right dad?” That was James, she knew her brothers voice anywhere.
“At least he went home to shower.” That was her dad, Y/N almost started to cry. “Luke has sat by her bed for nearly a week straight. I don’t actually know if he’s slept at all.”
Y/N heard the heart monitor next to her pick up, giving her away as her mother shot up, eyes looking around wild before landing on Y/N. Y/N took one look at her mother and could see everything, could see just how broken she looked. Her father and brother running into the room, what looked like food and water in hand.
“Mum?” Y/N cried silently, trying and failing to reach for her mother.
“Baby.” Her mother cried. “Oh god, my baby.”
“Get a doctor James.” Her father nudged her brother who stood shocked.
“Mum…” Y/N tried again, trying to sit. “I can’t move. Why can’t… why am i?”
“Shhh, it’s okay baby.” Her mother soothingly stroked her hair back. “It’s okay.”
“Why can’t I move?” Y/N whispered as she looked at her father, his eyes giving everything he was feeling away.
I was broken. Ran through Y/N’s head as she closed her eyes, tears sailing down her cheeks, rivers of emotions she didn’t want to feel.
“Mum. Dad.” James’ voice broke. “The doctor needs to check her over. We can come back in after she’s finished.”
James stayed a distance away from Y/N, which was not like him. He watched her carefully and yet never moved closer than three feet from the bed Y/N was bound in.
“We’ll be right outside, sweetheart.” Her father kissed her forehead, grabbing her mother’s hand and he moved her. “Come on, love.”
With a small lingering kiss to her forehead, Y/N watched as her family moved out of the small white room she lay in. She watched as the door shut and finally her eyes came to the doctor standing in her room.
“Miss Y/L/N. It’s good to see you awake.” She spoke, moving to sit on the seat her mother once sat. “I’m Doctor Jen.”
“Hi.” Y/N nodded, her good hand across her stomach again.
“Are you in pain?” Dr Jen asked.
“Only when I breath.” Y/N tried to smile, wincing in pain instead.
“That would be the broken ribs. I’ll up your dosage as you heal now your awake.” Dr Jen smiled kindly, sitting her clipboard on the bed by Y/N’s heavy casted hand.
“What’s wrong with me? Why can’t I move my legs?” Y/N asked, wanting to know the bad now.
“Um…” Dr Jen looked her board then back to Y/N. “You were in a car accident, and you hit a tree.”
“I know what happened. What’s wrong with me?” Y/N snapped at her before taking a painful deep breath. “Sorry.”
“Please don’t feel like you have to apologise..” Dr Jen smiled before she kept talking. “You suffered a mild concussion, a broken arm and torn muscles and ligaments in your shoulder. You’ve also damaged nerves in your lower back, causing a spinal injury.” She spoke.
“Will I walk?” Y/N asked.
“Right now I can’t say. You’ve been in a coma for a little over a week. We will have to do some test, but you seem like a strong one.” Dr Jen smiled.
“And my boy-“ Y/N cleared her throat. “The guy who was driving the car?”
“Tom?” Dr Jen looked back to her slip board, flipping a few pages. “He had a minor concussion, a broken nose and a broken arm.” She looked back to Y/N. “He was released 3 days ago.”
“Are you going to start the test now?” Y/N asked, a slight quiver in her voice.
“I’m just going to see how your vitals are right now and then I will come back a little later when you’re properly awake and we can do a full test.” Dr Jen nodded.
With a small nodded and a mumbled okay, Y/N moved through the check quickly before her mother and father came back into the room. When she asked about James’, her parents told her he had gone home to get her a fresh change of clothes and necessities. But Y/N couldn’t shake that something was wrong.
Before Y/N was about to drift back off to sleep, her door opened again. Thinking it was James, she was ready to change. What she saw though wasn’t James.
