LITCHFIELD – Harrison Vedrani’s layup with 1.9 seconds remaining completed a game-ending 8-0 run for the Campbell High School boys basketball, as the Cougars handed Conant its first loss, 50-49, on Monday in Division III action. Vedrani, a freshman, finished with 12 points while Zach Bergeon had a team-high 14 points, including a layup with 18 seconds left that came off an Orioles turnover at midcourt. Bergeon’s layup cut Conant’s lead to 49-48, and Eli Hodgson had a chance to make it a three-point lead with 11.7 seconds to go, but missed the front end of a one-and-one. Campbell (3-2) grabbed the rebound, raced to the other end of the floor, and Andrew Smarse found Vedrani under the basket for the game-winner. “The mental toughness is awesome,” Campbell coach John Langlois said. “Everything in life, let alone basketball, begins with mental toughness. They stepped up and played physically hard.” Robert O’Brien led Conant (6-1) with 15 points, but just six in the second half, while Hodgson had all 13 of his points after halftime. The Orioles opened the game by missing their first four field goal attempts, allowing Campbell to get out to a 6-2 lead.
