May 4th, 2018:  Starting from June Harry Styles’ tour will partner with the organization Reverb to minimize the impact of the USA leg of his tour on the environment. Reverb is a non profit organization that was founded in 2004 by environmentalist Lauren Sullivan and her musician husband, Adam Gardner of Guster. Reverb aims at implementing various programs to both reduce the impact of musicians’ touring on the environment and educate fans to environmental preservation. The organization works in the believe that many people doing something has more of a positive impact on the environment than a few people doing everything.

Fan engagement by Reverb is done on multiple levels including volunteering programs, fan donation programs, online social media campaigns, and online car pooling programs, among others. From the stand point of the artists, Reverb works with them and their touring companies to develop a plan that reduces the overall environmental impact of their tour. Among the programs that Reverb offers are:

Composting and recycling of all the waste produced by the crew during their stay and the fans during the show.

Farm to stage: partnering of the touring company with local farms to minimize pollution due to transport of food across the country or the world.

Supplementation of green products and solutions for backstage use and for use by the fans. For example, Reverb set up free water refill stations throughout the 2016 Las Vegas country music festival Route 91 Harvest. They also offered special Harvest music festival refillable water bottles for $10, with profits going to the organization to fund their programs.

Calculation and reduction of the carbon emission associated with the tour’s operations.

Coordination of biodiesel fueling from local and sustainable stocks.

Since 2004, Reverb has worked with over 200 artists and bands including Maroon 5, Dave Matthews Band, Alanis Morisette, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Diplo, My Chemical Romance, and others. The video below shared from Reverb website, shows the type of work this organization does with an artist’s tour:

  For Harry Styles’ tour, Reverb is calling for volunteers to “help spread REVERB’s message of sustainability, guide visitors through the REVERB Action-Village to support nonprofit organizations, and help eliminate single-use plastic water bottles through our Rock’n’Refill program.”

Volunteers have to be at least 18 years old and need to fill up an application at the following link. As of today Reverb has received enough applications to fill all the volunteering positions, but you can submit one to be added to the waiting list.
