in castle town:

No one knows when Scotty Kidd was born, or who is birth parents were, it seems as if he had just appeared one day out of thin air, abandoned at the front desk of the hospital without so much as a note. He is passed around through the foster care system with little care, bouncing from home to home as parent after parent gives up on him. When he’s younger he wonders why this always happens, why it always seems to be him who gets tossed away, but when that wondering becomes too painful he forces himself to stop. Instead he boxes his emotions away, and adopts a rather manic personality to cover it up. After all if nothing is going to stop him from being a lonely boy with no friends or family to speak of at least causing a scene will get him some attention. It is around the same time that he starts fighting, and it does surprise his bullies the first time he hits back but it doesn’t do much to deter them. It only seems to spurn them on, his pathetic attempt at fighting. So he turns to google and youtube, absorbing every self defense technique he can. It is far less pathetic the second time he hits back, because he keeps hitting, and hitting, and hitting, and this time it is the larger older boy who ends up on the ground crying and bleeding. Sure, all the other kids stare at him like a freak afterwards, but most of them already did that, at least after that no one dares lay a hand on him.

In the summer of his 13th year he sneaks out of his current home, and he disappears into the woods, first for a day, then two, before he knows it a week has passed and it seems that no one is looking, no one cares, and so he stays there, because it seems to suit him better. For a while he does well enough for himself out there, surviving on the edible plants he can find. Eventually though the winter comes, and after the first snow he realizes he’ll at least need warmer clothing. He figures he can sneak back into town to steal some winter gear, he’d had an easy enough time sneaking around unnoticed. Now though that he’s filthy and scrawny he barely makes it into town before someone notices him and grabs him by the hand. Though he tries to fight back against the strange adult his strength is mostly gone after the six or so months he’s spent hiding out in the woods. So he is dragged kicking and screaming to the local police station. The police question him for several hours but he remains a brick wall, easily assisted by the fact that he couldn’t hear the questions they were asking. Eventually though food comes, he assumes it’s a bribe, even to this day he thinks it must of been, why else would they give him anything. Yet they seem not to want anything in return, though they do make him wash his hands before he starts devouring everything they’ve brought to him. When he’s full though he finally feels willing to give them his name, so he quickly scrawls it on a piece of paper and watches as the cop looks from him to the paper then back to him.
