The journey. The collection of moments that get you to where you’re going. Time away gives time to think, reflect, clarify. Thank you to all those that have enabled me to have this time, whether through coaching classes, money or just understanding why the gym is closed this week. Riding in the backseat on the way to The CrossFit Games, I think about what it took to get here. I’ve trained for The Games for 4 years. Before I was old enough, I was training for it. I missed the mark in 2016. I made it in 2017. 2018. I remember every training, who was there, sets, reps, times. I remember every swim set with Dana. When my swim stroke “clicked”. The bodywork with Matt and Joe. Texting Dominic after Wodapalooza in January to start a nutrition plan and logging ALL my food. Every Saturday I’ve missed kid’s soccer games, family trips to SoCal and birthday parties because I had to train. I also remember all the notes from friends, family and gym members urging me to keep going. To do the work because it inspires or motivates them. This gets me closer to my “why”. I don’t want to let people down. None of us do. We easily let ourselves down. But we hate to let others down. While “It’s up to you,” it’s not about you. This is why I stress that we miss you when you’re not in class. We’re all better when you show up. We need you. My “why” of 2018. My life is not my own. The Apostle Paul wrote, “But my life is worth nothing to me unless I use it for finishing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus--the work of telling others the Good News about the wonderful grace of God.” - Acts 20:24. I don’t want to be your inspiration or motivation. Those describe emotions. Emotions are fleeting thoughts. Thoughts don’t change behavior. Behavior changes thoughts. I want to be the example of what a disciplined life can achieve. Discipline is what you do. I will let you down, but you can rest assured I’m doing my best to be the example so that you, too, can experience the wealth I have from setting goals and pursuing them with relentless and refining discipline.
