(lvl 4) Lesson 8-10
Today we will do three lessons. Lesson 8 is about saying “it’s okay to ...”. Lesson 9 is about saying “you’re not supposed to” / “you shouldn’t” and lastly lesson 10 is about 중에(서) and 사이에(서).
Lesson 8
“It’s okay to” → 아/어/여도 되다. You might recognise some parts, so let’s see:
되다 = to function / to be possible / can do
도 = too / as well / also
아/어/여도 = even if / even when
아/어/여도 되다 = it’s okay to...
Examples:
켜다 = to turn on
켜도 되다 = it’s okay to turn ... on
켜도 돼요 = it’s okay to turn it on
컴퓨터 켜도 돼요 = it’s okay to turn the computer on
시작하다 = to begin; to start
시작해도 되다 = it is okay to start
시작해도 돼요 = You can start
시작해도 돼요? = Can I start? / Can we start?
안 + 아/어/여도 되다 = “do not have to...”
먹다 = to eat
안 먹어도 돼요 = you don’t have to eat it
Lesson 9
You shouldn’t / you’re not supposed to → (으)면 안 돼요 / 하면 안 돼요. You’ll recognise the 안 돼요 part from lesson 8, (으)면 is explained in level 2 lesson 23. Literally, (으)면 안 돼요 means “it is not okay if...”. Let’s see some examples:
열다 = to open
열면 안 돼요 = you should not open it
만지다 = to touch
만지면 안 돼요 = you're not supposed not touch it
Lesson 10
중에(서) = in the middle.
에(서) = location marker
중 = center/middle
With 중에(서) you can say “Between A and B” → A하고 B중에(서)
이 책하고 저 책 중에서 = between this book and that book
You can also use 중에(서) for saying “among ...”
이 세 개 중에서 = among these three
사이에서 also expresses “among...”
친구들 사이에서 = among friends
사이에 is used with physical space between two objects or people. Note: 서 is not used!
약국은 학교하고 경찰서 사이에 있어요. = the pharmacy is between the school and the police station
