Episode 154: Flight Delay
Zack and Nectra continued moving the body of The Phantom Matador. Â Zack had wearied of transporting The Phantom Matador by lifting his limbs quickly, and Nectra had recommended the switch to carrying the criminal by keeping his arms over their shoulders. Â Appearing to walk side by side, the three trudge through the jungle. Â Zack was definitely moving slower, and looking paler. Â He coughed violently and slowed to a stop.
âHey, mind if we take another break?â he asked.  âThis heatâs gettinâ to me⊠maybe Igneousâ ice tub wasnât such a crazy idea after all.â
âIce tub? Â And no, I donât mind.â
âYeah, she was⊠overheating or something?  And so she made or bought a kind of hot tub that was cold.  Who knows why.â
âWell, I donât think we can do that,â she said, awkwardly lowering the Phantom Matadorâs body to the muddy floor of the alien jungle. Â âBut we can rest a bit. Â I can even scout ahead if youâd like!â
âYeah, sure,â said Zack. Â âDonât be too long, though. Â I dunno what Fletch drugged Matty with but itâs not deadly, so heâll come to eventually. Â We should both be on the lookout for that.â
âRight,â said Nectra.  âIâll⊠get our bearings.  Make sure weâre on the right path.  Ooh, or maybe ask one of those snake people for directions!â
âI dunno how well thatâd go over,â said Zack. Â âI said you mightâve been involved in those murders. Â Plus you donât speak the language, do you?â
âRight, the murders⊠rest here, Iâll be back.â
Nectraâs wings opened, and she pulled her staff off of her back. Â Using the leverage that it granted, she easily jumped to a low branch, kicked herself even higher, and began gliding away.
Zack watched the flying shangmere until she was out of sight before turning back to The Phantom Matador, half expecting the criminal to already be up and pointing an energy blade at him. Â Zack reached into his coat, and pulled out a Purcellian Striker.
âNot a bad idea, imaginary Mat,â he said, charging the Striker and aiming it at his prisoner. Â In time he found a suitably dry log didnât look poisonous and he sat upon it. Â Minutes later he drifted off to sleep.
Much earlier, on another worldâŠ
Zack checked his passport again before looking out the window. Â The pilot for his charter plane was running late, and the other two passengers at the private terminal werenât talkative. Â One was a haukreen carrying a glowing glass tube over its shoulder, and the other a human wearing a business suit and checking a watch while reading a small pamphlet on the ecological impact of human civilizations on non-human planets.
An orange skinned vantarian neared, the first that Zack had ever seen with his own eyes. Â The four-legged creature approached, looking comfortable in a captainâs uniform that looked like it had been designed for humans but altered to accommodate humanoid employees. Â The vantarian tipped its hat.
âApologies, everyone,â he said. Â âWe can begin boarding now, there was just a last minute charter service that I needed to attend to. Â Which one of you is Zack Gamma?â
Zack shifted uncomfortably and looked at the other two passengers, who were similarly looking at each other and him. Â Zack looked back.
âOh, it involves the delay,â said the captain, smiling. Â âAre you Mister Gamma, then? Someone came here to meet you. Â Is that fine?â
Zack looked at the captain in confusion before glancing at the entrance to the comfortable sitting area that acted as the private terminalâs waiting area. Â A grizzled, though well-groomed and decidedly sheepish, Azar stood at the door. Â He raised a hand in a friendly half-wave. Â Zack returned the gesture and turned back.
âYeah, yeah thatâs fine. Â I just go through the double doors when weâre done talking?â
âOh, yes,â said the captain, turning toward the doors himself. Â âTake all the time you need, he tipped generously to earn a little extra time for your plane before we take off.â
The vantarian walked toward the double doors and the two other passengers followed, eying Zack and the stranger curiously. Â Zack watched them go as Azar neared, looking almost apologetic.
âHello, Zack,â he said. Â âI found your folder and realized you were slipping off without saying goodbye.â
âI said goodbye last night,â said Zack. Â âAnd again before you came out to Ravelar with a former pro-wrestler for your secret vacation, if youâll recall. Â I donât belong here.â
âWeâre your friends here, Zack. Â Seems to me you belong where friends are. Â Plus, if memory serves, you werenât thrilled with the plan to head to Ravelar.â
âI was wrong about that,â said Zack. Â âZamona wasnât waiting to get you alone to turn in the bounty. Â Or if he is, heâs playing a longer game, one I wouldnât expect him to have the patience for.â
âYou donât give him enough credit, Zack. Â Heâs actually very bright.â
âMaybe not. Â You could see the silver lining of a smog cloud, though, so forgive me for being paranoid. Â Itâs in the job.â
âOne you do very well. Â Stay safe out there, Zack.â
âAnd you stay safe here. Â Take care, okay?â
âI will. Â Goodbye, Zack. Â And one more thing?â
Azar reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, glowing disk, a coin made of energy. Â Zack recoiled, but Azar was faster, quickly slipping it into Zackâs hand. Â The detective almost dropped it in surprise.
âHey!â he shouted, while his brain processed.  âWow, thatâs⊠thatâs heavier than I thought.  And⊠almost hot.â
âHold onto that for me, would you?â said Azar.  âI donât like keeping all my eggs in one basket.  Oneâs in the bank, and the interest alone is paying for everything here⊠the other I keep with me.  And I think that you should take the third.â
âAzar, thatâs crazy. Â This thing should be-â
âIn a bank? Â In a safe? Zack, it does no good in either of those. Â If I lose one, I have two others. Â Just keep it until we meet again.â
âAzar, I appreciate that weâve been through a lot here, but this is a lot of money. Â You still donât know that I wonât just run off with it, abandon you, and drop this in a bank somewhere for myself.â
âAre you saying you will?â
âWell, no⊠but thatâs not really the point, is it?  You shouldnât trust someone with this much money.â
âI shouldnât,â said Azar. Â âI will though. Â Bring it back in one piece for a nice bonus. Â Or use it for expenses.â
Zack looked at the coin and gulped.
âAzar, this technically makes me one of the wealthiest people ever by proxy.â
âIt makes you one of the wealthiest people ever literally, at least while you have it. Â The oddity with wealth is that you need a place to spend it.â
âI can spend it all I like after I finish this job for the monasteries.â
âYou canât spend it in one place, though,â said Azar. Â âIâve looked. Â Look, this is just for emergencies. Â And after what I read in that red folder you slid under my door-â
âYouâre a fast reader if you read all that already.â
âI was in the habit of double-checking the fine print when I signed on for my hazard pay jobs,â said Azar. Â âTeleporting rigs donât build themselves, after all. Â You need to know what youâre getting into.â
âFair point. Â Look, Azar, this is still crazy even if you DO trust me.â
âIâve earned the right to be eccentric, Gamma, and Iâd ask you to respect that. Â We all have lives we want to live, and Iâd like to do things that I like to do. Â Just like you enjoy helping people, and like Zamona enjoys wrestling. Â Did you hear about his first match the other night?â
âYeah, itâs crazy,â said Zack.  âHe was good, they say⊠though I think itâs bad for our cover.â
âOf course you do,â said Azar. Â âLook, itâll be a while before you can access a bank and take payment from me. Â Just hold onto this in case you need it, all right?â
Zack narrowed his eyes but Azar stared back with large, friendly eyes that lacked any real concern about the world or the reasonable dangers it contained. Â Zack eventually closed his eyes.
âFine,â said Zack. Â âBut youâre takinâ this back as soon as we meet again.â
âDo you think thatâs likely?  Your notes in the red folder were⊠thorough.â
âLook, just follow those exactly. Â Iâll keep in touch eventually, Iâll just have to keep tabs on how it unfolds.â
âAre you sure you can do that? Â Itâs a complicated scheme.â
âHey, did you forget who youâre talkinâ to?â said Zack, taking a step away and tapping his hat with the coin.  âMind like a steel trap.  Look, I donât wanna delay the fine folks on my plane any more, soâŠâ
âGoodbye, Zack,â said Azar. Â âAnd good luck.â
