It’s rare that I look into non-Bandai kits. Many are fine, some are even really cool, but I’ve never been too keen on buying from overseas – especially with the current climate where shipping a kit may cost many times more than the base price.
Thankfully, it seems Sheik Mainland has become a bit of a popular manufacturer as of late. One of the series I've had my eye on is the smaller 1/18th Xenostrike/Xenodash figures. A little spare cash and a sale from one of my fave online model shops sealed the deal!
Here’s my review of the Sheik Mainland 3Min Project Xenostrike figure.
The first thing that hit me when I got the package was it’s a lot bigger than I thought it’d be. It’s about the size of a standard Bandai HG box. This made me wonder about the size of the kit inside. It’s 1/18th scale… which means nothing if you don't know what the size of a 1/1 scale figure would be. As I got into it, I realized just why the box was so big for what should be a very small figure.
There’s Two in a Box.
That’s right. For the price of an average Grunt Suit, you get two of these little guys. Not just the little guys, either.
You get So Much More.
So the build went smooth. Despite the small size, it’s a shockingly well constructed little kit. The parts list is as small as the figure: Three parts for the arms, three for the legs, three for the body and three for the head. Most of the joints are simple ball and sockets with a few hinges.
The only warning I can give is, thanks to the size of the guys, keep a pair of soft jaw pliers or something similar around as the fitment of things is on the tighter side of life.
One of the things I cannot stress is these little models are insanely flexible. Like… the only bad mark I can think of is there’s no toe bend.
It doesn't Need a toe bend.
It Kinda’ looks like it Has a toe bend.
I don’t think that they could’ve added one in without making the size of the model larger or different from what we get.
These little guys are around the same size of Bandai’s SDCS kits. They bend and flex better than Bandai’s larger kits.
It’s also human shaped - as in these little pocket sized figures are fantastic analogs without any caveats like “Take the armor off” or "Ignore the leg length".
These little guys are something I, as an Artist, have been looking for for a long time:
A Decent Pose Reference Figure.
Aside from the figures, these both come with a full assortment of weapons. So we’ve got a pair of extremely flexible human-shaped figures that are perfectly travel sized with props…
But That's Not All!
They also come with tiny stands that have storage underneath for the extra pairs of hands that come with them! That’s TWO Whole Figures with their own sets of weapons, stands and extra hands in a single HG-sized box. And the price I got it for was a little over $20 with tax. You honestly can’t beat that kind of deal with or without the sale I took advantage of.
So what’s the verdict? If you're an Artist-type and you can find these little guys for a good price; Pick them up. It’s a simple build and you get Two of them. Besides the need for a little extra leverage to get some of the parts to click into place (It’s such a satisfyingly solid click, too), mine had a bit of extra mold release on some of the parts. Enough that you kinda’ feel it if you build both figures. I don’t normally recommend giving runners a wash unless you plan to paint stuff but Yeah! Give these a wash before you get too into it.
All in all, these are a pair of fun little kits. Sheik Mainland has another in this particular series that I’m planning on getting. The guys will be getting some girls to hang out with. I don’t know for sure if they also come in pairs but I’ll add that to the inevitable write-up I do for them once I order them and get them in. = )
