This is wonderful! I think youāre spot on. On top of which, Iāve always read a hint of survival-bred self-reliance in his arrogance routine, too ā because itās clear thereāve been few people in his adult life who have championed Dorianās strengths for him; he has to defiantly do it himself. And I can also see the self-love as possibly a quiet attempt to drown out some self-loathing and doubtā¦ tl;dr now Iām thinking endlessly about Dorian again THANKS FOR THIS GIFT

Oh, absolutely. Only child with few friends and absent/emotionally distant parents, in a place where emotional honesty was weakness and where betrayal was as matter-of-fact as breathing? Totally wouldāve had to develop such survival tactics. And yeah, I guess that was what I was trying to say under all the rambling: I think his self-esteem is actually pretty damn low (heās used to being tossed aside, he thinks itās what he deserves), and I think there's a hell of a lot of self-loathing going on under the preening facade.
Iām always thinking endlessly about Dorian. I just wanted to pass on the curse. *fiendish grin*
