Artist Devin Morris of 3dotzine talks about his powerful Application Series. Limited edition prints now available at theveryblackproject.com:
"A lot of my work is stumbled upon. The Applications Series" began by me noticing that a lot of men on queer dating apps were contributing to a very large general conversation where similarities in thought and actions were displayed. I always look at what's funny or coy and smile. Many profiles were ridiculously serious and some brilliantly ignore the idea of a dating app by using their page as a platform to tell a joke or to express a frustration. I began taking screen shots of the profiles that spoke to me most. In different states I saw that a collective outcry was forming around social injustices, economic disparities and sometimes around a repeated mundane slang or phrase. I began to think of these different bodies of people and how so many different individuals can arrive to an environment where they believe some sort of satisfaction might exist. It was the American Dream all over again. I then began to think about how a black man would relate to the flag. Does he feel like a dreamer in the shadow of the flag? Is he ashamed of how this country treats him? Is he proud to be an American, to have freedoms limited him in such vast pool of opportunity. If these apps represented America, what does my body mean when gazed upon by all these differing individuals in this geo-located environment. Applications series deals with frayed communication and confused perceptions." —3dotzine
Monday Meditations by Devin Morris 3dotzine On Inspiration: Hits in an instant. Move move, glide like that and wear those pants. I like the way you move me. You feel unnecessary, near, over encompassing, distant and effervescent. Something I think I’m living without knowing good and well that you are near and wafting of influence. I caught a whiff of tobacco brown and a dusty trail of salmon pinks and sun kissed camel clashing as ocean waves do. Swoosh goes the Nike stampede campaign. Pushing and shoving as it goes. Horizons imprint like a million thank you’s from gods off afar in the distance... Good Morning On muses: I find myself moved by the excellence of my neighbor, my family and friends. The people who walk next you. As my eyesight is short I cast my dreams of visions upon family, flowers, buildings and people with great presence. I like to think of muses as one would think about the scents at an apothecary, they waft and glide. Sometimes they 👊🏾💥 On women: My mother is a woman. As is yours. I praise the ground a Black woman walks on and hope to uplift women in my work. For no other reason than to say I appreciate and regard you as the Queen.

It’s the gray areas, the feelings that are not easily described are what I’m approaching. The tide calms, the waves persists.
