3 BILLBOARDS - Amérique réac et raciste, répliques en mode culte sur fond d’amertume et d’ironie aggravée, personnages bien caricaturaux mais intrigue à trois sous... en plus d’être à propos de trois panneaux.

Le film de Martin McDonagh cherche vertigineusement le formalisme et l’ironie mordante des frères Coen, mais à force de ressemblances approximatives, voire grotesques, il s’écroule. Il égare son thème central dans un labyrinthe un peu jouissif mais qui devient systématique de rebondissements et brusques changements de tonalité.

Bien que multiprimé, le film de Martin McDonagh, narrant le conflit d’une femme avec la police locale après le meurtre de sa fille, joue un peu sur la pathos facile et n’échappe pas au lissage de la bonne conscience.      

Strong points of ‘3 Billboards...’ are as below:

Great characters! (An angry-old-woman, a dying chief, a villainous cop etc.)

Great screenplay!

Great storyline, full of surprises!

Great performances! (Frances Mcdormand, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson)

But above all, it has Just the right amount of everything. It has violence, but no blood-baths which you see in some of the Quentin Tarantino movies. It has abusive language, but not like F-word in every sentence in some of the smuggler, underworld or drug-lord movies. It also has some slice of life elements, but again, not in abundance like in some of Woody Allen movies. The movie has suspense elements  and it always stays at the centre of the story, but there is definitely a lot more than suspense to this movie.

The movie takes you on a road, shows you something, a part of a story, and just when you start wanting more or when you feel like having enough, there is a flash and you are on a different way, on to the different part of the story.

Do watch the movie for performances of Oscar nominees Frances McDormand and Sam Rockwell. Do watch it for Woody Harrelson’s act of Chief Willoughby.
