Surely after the tenth time the boulder rolled back down the hill, Sisyphus gave up on making progress. He must have tried less and less with each attempt Until he was doing the bare minimum. The lesson he learned was that effort made no difference.

Sometimes I wonder if I'm just deluding myself believing otherwise, If life is just a cruel joke of cycles of near progress That collapse right before success, As if the spin of the earth as it stays in place Applies to lifetimes and effort and days.

But I know that things can change. I know that growth hides in the shadows of distraction, Humble until it is stumbled upon. I know that the same tide that wipes away the footprints on the sand Reshapes the curvature of the coast and the land.
