Generik Vapeur - Oranienburgerstrasse in front of the synagogue- From the series: "Mitte - searching for the middle": the New Berlin - Photographs 1991-94    -         It was not the fall of the Wall that seemed to me to be the really spectacular political event for Berlin, more the fact, that both the inhabitants of West Berlin and East Berlin found themselves involuntarily in a new city. No one had asked them. In those first years after 1990, the city vibrated in a transformation fever. This was particularly concentrated in the former centre of the city, in the "Mitte" district. Everything was new, everything was being done for the first time, history was coming back to life, fantasies were flourishing, fortune seekers were being attracted.  - At that time I earned my money with repro-photography for the Senate of Culture of Berlin and weeks long I photographed paintings and lithos from the picture stock of the former Magistrate of Berlin (East) in the depot Jebensstrasse 2 (today Newton Foundation). All varieties and good types of socialist realism came before my lens.
