Check it out yo it’s ya boy back up in the building giving a big shout out to rap music for still keeping me entertained after all the years. That’s right it’s about that time when I’m posted up at the zippyshare with some of the hotbox HQ’s heaviest rotated new raps from the last 7 weeks or so. We start things off with raygarraty’s favorite Mozzy song which features the type of killer production that 1 Up Top Ahk is mostly missing. Thankfully the fettuccine fetchin’ mozzarella fella would sound dope over a metronome. Much respect to The Jacka (M.I.P.) who delivers a potent hard drive-pasted performance even if a close headphone listen reveals overlapping lines that were recorded one bar at a time. No problem really as it results in a calm, smooth on-beat delivery whereas Mozzy appears to do his entire verse in one take and you can hear the human flaws of being slightly off at times and running out of breath in between a few lines. Just a personal preference really I’m sure most rappers bunch in every bar or so at this point in the game but if I can’t tell then it doesn’t matter. Like always there’s enough lean talk on here but for every Pablo Juan’s “geeked up on percs and xans” there are several precautionary “sippin’ lean make you sleep your life away” and most sobering is a looking worse for wear Lil Blood: “stomach problems scared to see a doctor about it / nerves bad hands shaking pray to god it ain’t Parkinson’s”. Damn. Familial drug issues are reported as well, from 21’s “mama on that dog food it ain’t nothin’ new” to 30 Glizzy’s “my auntie was a shooter, my uncle was a snorter”. Dirty from earlier this year reminded me how the trick of dipping into your show money to get a more famous rapper on your track does actually getting people to pay attention to your song. This time out Boosie hops on Pensacola, FL rapper Dee Wee’s “Why They Hate Us” with potent results: “we got rapists and child molesters comin’ in and out the doors but you wanna give me life for some dope”. More explicit hood politics from Bo Deal: “my crimes don’t carry misdemeanors / so if i get popped I’m goin’ til I’m a senior”. 21, too: “anger in my genes they used to hang us up with ropes / they killed Martin Luther and all he did was spoke”. Anyone claiming modern rap music isn’t addressing social issues is a moron who is not listening.
