A great proponent of equality, Activist and Scholar W.E.B. Du Bois (William Edward Burghardt Du Bois) Â was instrumental in aiding process of human rights for African-American's.He was the first African American to earn a Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1895. Du Bois went on to become a great writer and co-founded the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People in 1909. Du Bois is best known as a leader of African-American rights during the first half of the 20th century.

We can’t have #29daysofEXCELLENCE on @thedrbco without recognizing a woman that helped pave the way for black female entrepreneurship, Madam CJ Walker.
“I am not satisfied in making money for myself. I endeavor to provide employment for hundreds of the women of my race.” - Madam C.J. Walker
Madam CJ Walker (born Sarah Breedlove) is recognized as one of the first female American millionaires. She acquired her wealth after creating specialized hair products for African-American hair in 1905. At the time, she was suffering from a scalp problem that caused hair loss.  Â
Walker overcame overwhelming adversity on the way to her fortune. She rose from her status as an orphaned 7-year-old in the poor South, to picking cotton, to washerwoman, then cook, then finally, an entrepreneur.Â
She built her company with hard work. Walker traveled all over the country promoting the products and giving lectures. She also founded Madame C.J. Walker Laboratories to manufacture her products and train sales beauticians. En route to her fortune, Walker received guidance from mentor and first black female millionaire, Annie Malone.
Walker was in large part a philanthropist. She founded philanthropies that awarded educational scholarships and donated large amounts to National Association for the Advancement of Colored People and the National Conference on Lynching, as well as others that focused on improving the lives of African-Americans. She also donated the largest amount of money by an African-American to help build an Indianapolis YMCA in 1913. She gave 2/3 of her estate to charity upon her death in 1919. She was 51.
29 Days of Excellence:Â Day 10 - Charles Hamilton Houston
Charles Hamilton Houston is referred  to as “The Man Who Killed Jim Crow.” A lesser-known leader of the Civil Rights Movement, Houston, was a great legal strategist and played a key role in every Supreme Court case between 1930 and the 1954 landmark Brown v. Board of Education decision. Leading the NAACP’s legal team, he took apart Jim Crow by testing the “separate by equal” doctrine in the courts. Houston  was influenced by his negative experience in Jim Crow military camps while serving as a soldier in World War I. After he returned to the US in 1919 and the witnessed ongoing race riots, he made the decision to fight racial injustice.
Houston graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School where he also served on the Harvard Law Review. He later taught at Harvard Law School where he taught and became a mentor to Thurgood Marshall.
On the 9th day of Excellence we recognize Nobel and Pulitzer Prize-winning American novelist. Toni Morrison. One of Morrison’s best-known works is 1970 novel, The Bluest Eye, in which she tells a story of a young African-American girl who believes her hard life would be better if she only had blue eyes. Other popular works from Morrison are her novels Sula and Songs of Solomon. Morrison has authored several other novels as well as several children’s books. She is a graduate of Howard University (1953) and Cornell University (1955) and taught as a professor at Princeton University from 1989 to 2006. Morrison’s recent projects include 2012 novel, Home, and Desdemona, an Othello-inspired opera.
