It’s amazing how one decision can change the course of your entire week. The word I initially used in place of change was “derail”, but I feel derail comes with judgement. “Derail” comes with expectations, and more importantly, an inability to fulfil those expectations. As someone who’s trying to create more space in my life for spontaneity, “derail” is a word I would like to limit the use of in my vocabulary. 

My structure for the two weeks before this past week was to run four times a week: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. And on my Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, I made no prior plans. There was nothing on my calendar. The plan was that after my run, if I felt like going out or meeting someone, I’d do it then. Spontaneity. 

What happened was that I decided to make dinner plans on Wednesday. It just so happened that by the time I was done with work, it was already dinner time, and because I made plans with some friends, I couldn’t go running. I went for dinner instead. 

And while dinner was enjoyable, I kind of broke the pattern by having it in the first place, so when another friend texted me and invited me to dinner on Friday, I didn’t say no. I figured I liked this friend, and if I made exceptions for one friend, I should make exceptions for this other friend as well.

Unsurprisingly, I finished work late on Friday as well. 

Normally, if I didn’t have dinner plans, I’d pause work and go running, and then come back to work afterwards and finish slightly later. But given that I had dinner plans, I couldn’t do that. Instead, I worked through the run, and left for dinner immediately afterwards.

This is how I went from running four times a week, to running once a week.

I already have dinner plans this coming Friday, but my other running days are commitment-free, and I intend to keep them that way.
