I was in a hotel in Santa Monica. My eye was drawn to this guy who was in reception. So, I got up and went over to him. I was like, 'Are you Burt Bacharach?' he sat talking to us and was telling me that he was going to London to play his first ever UK show.

I said, 'Who's going to sing 'This Guy's in Love with You' ?, which is one of my favourite songs, and he said, "Why don't you come and do it?" and to cut a very long, amazing story short, Jill came with me, and we all ended up in his dressing room.

"Ahahaha," she replies, "I remember asking you if you were and you were skeptical."

And she did. And multiple people have, in the past. And I was. Skeptical. Whatever information I looked into previously didn't match my own experience, but I had not been informed by anyone that autism can present differently in women. And I suppose technically, socially, if not internally, woman is what I am.

I am not new to neurodivergence, and I've written about giftedness a few times, and the utterly weird experience of being somehow different from other people, but feeling like you yourself are not different at all, because yourself is all you've ever known to be.

"Like, I know I'm not 'normal'," I tell her, "but also the way I am is, to me, 'normal'."

"Yeah, that is the neurodivergent experience in a nutshell, honestly," she says.

A few hours later, I send her another message. "Does autism cause clumsiness," I deadpan. "Asking for a friend."

The reply is more serious than I expect. Some people do experience coordination issues, she says, but she's not sure if it's a strongly associated symptom.

"Imagine," I reply, "if I actually had a reason for my clumsiness. Finally, vindication."
