Warpaint (with Amatorski) - den Atelier (Luxembourg) - 25.08.2014

It’s safe to say that I’ve never been less pepared for a gig. I always follow Den Atelier’s announcements, so I must have known about this concert, but didn’t feel the need to check the band out (I’m not that much into female voices as you may have noticed). But when on Monday morning, a friend asked me if I’d come, it only took a brief listen on Spotify to convince me.

Arriving at the venue, I thought it would be easy to get to the barrier and we sort of did – but at the extreme left. I was surprised as I had been to gigs where more people were queueing in front of me and I still got a much better spot, but the reason probaby was that the balcony was closed off (den Atelier does that when not many tickets have been sold for a show) so nobody headed there. As I noticed later, only the official photographers were allowed to go to the balcony. Good for them as the barrier was put so close to the stage, they wouldn’t have fitted in between.

Support act was the Belgian band Amatorski with only two of the three members coming on stage, probably because it was already crowded with instruments, notably keyboards. The music wasn’t bad, very dreamy, but it felt like it should rather be listened to at home than at a concert venue.

When the setlist for Warpaint was fixed on stage, we noticed that it looked very short and therefore feared we’d also get a short(ened) peformance, maybe for the lack of ticket sales? Happy to report our guess was wrong, with Warpaint playing extended versions of some songs, esp. the last one, Elephants. It took me a while to really warm up (and I was under the impression that the same was true for the band), but from Undertow on, I really enjoyed the gig. I coudn’t of course sing along as I hadn’t even heard most of the songs before, but the music is more than apt for dancing! Taking photos wasn’t an easy task this time, not only because of my limited view, but mainly because of the light, or rather the lack thereof.
