twenty one pilots covering cancer
BLURRYFACE REVIEW > Twenty One Pilots
Blurryface, Twenty One Pilot’s much anticipated 4th studio album, can be explained as nothing but fascinating. Although this album is a far cry from their distinct Vessel era alternative-pop sound, each of its 14 tracks bring something new to the table. The album’s first single, fairly local, left fans grovelling for more upon its release, and created a gateway for the overall feel of the album. Unfortunately, that’s where some thing’s tend to go downhill. The feel of the album incorporates the inner thoughts of many, self-doubt, low self-esteem and anxious feelings which is very respectable, don’t get me wrong, but it’s arguably the same feel from all 3 of their previous albums. I guess you could say that I’m just one disappointed fan that hoped they’d tackle a few new 21st century issues this time.
Music wise, the bar has definitely been raised for the Ohio-based duo. Whether it be the enchanting drum beats or the killer ukulele solos, this album saw nothing short of excellence achieved. Of course, being a band of only two, there was a lot of sound mixing and techno layering that in my opinion just added to the musical effect. As far as melody’s go though, I’d have to say that I’m extremely disappointed. In the song ‘lane boy’, the lyrics read ‘there’s a few songs on this record that feel common’ and regrettably, there’s no lie there. ‘Heavydirtysoul’ ‘Doubt’ ‘Hometown’ and ‘Not Today’ had me squint-eyed and lost in thought as I tried to decide whether I’d heard this song before. Not a great move, but nonetheless, the songs remained up-beat and undoubtedly enjoyable.
To the pair’s credit, the album is full of both creative and relatable lyrics that really make you appreciate the music and what these guys go through to make it. Perhaps one of the most popular songs on the album, ‘stressed out’ could be described as a modern-day anthem for teens and young adults wishing they could relive their childhood years before everything became so complicated. Track 9, ‘Polarize’, is a refreshing spark of foot-tapping head-bobbing beats accompanied with personal lyrics that make you want to put the song on repeat. The same things can be said for ‘tear in my heart’ ‘Message Man and ‘Ride’. ‘We don’t believe what’s on TV’ bears some questionable words but ties in with the album well, proving to be a popular listen, as well as ‘The Judge’ which is without a doubt a fan favourite.
Overall, Blurryface is a musical rollercoaster that travels the rails of alternative hip-hop with an unfocused edge. The songs presented are both lyrically great and musically enjoyable with the good thankfully outweighing the bad. I wouldn’t recommend jumping straight to Blurryface for first-time twenty one pilot listeners, instead recommending that you have a listen to Vessel first, but for the hard core skeleton clique members like myself, Blurryface is an album that won’t be leaving your ’25 most played’ anytime soon.
