PHV Blogger Christina M. Rauās Poetry Payments and Earnings for December 2016 Update (+$169.14): A Year Of Poetry, for whatever itās worth
Poetry as art. As fun. As a business. As a hobby. As a chore. Poetry this year took on categories and dismissed them and pondered them again. Iāve never seen my writing/submitting process in such a way as thisāhow much value does my poetry hold? What kind of value does it have? In turn, I was asking for my self-worth. Iām a poet. Whatever value I put on poetry corresponds with the choices I make. I can spend time submitting to non-paying journals that usually accept my work, or I can dedicate my time to paying venues that usually reject my work. I can get ornery about journals that donāt accept simultaneous submissions and require reading fees, or I can spend my time basking in the glory of that one poem that saw the light of day in an obscure international journal. Emotions bubbled, ravished, raged and settled. Work ethic powered up and dwindled over and over. Creativity gleamed, shimmered, fizzled, shone. Motivation revved on.
Thank you, Jess, for this experience. I canāt remember the last time I submitted so much in one year. I canāt remember the last time I got rejected so much in one year. Mostly, though, this is the first year Iāve been paid so much for my work, and that small paymentācertainly not enough for survivalātransferred into a feeling so much more valuable. Yes, what Iām doing has value. We read, we feel, we live, we share, and we grow so much through all of it. Having completed this year-long process of tracking and revealing, I feel like Iāve graduated from the School of Literary Citizenship, and Iām a much better person for it.Ā

2016 Writing Round-Up
I was tagged by @archangel-with-a-shotgun! Iām a little late, but Iāve been hella sick and crazy busy at work, so this is the first opportunity Iāve really had to fill this out!

Favorite Fic: Oh gosh...Even though I didnāt write a lot this year, I wrote some stuff that I really liked. I loved writing Gabriel Vs The WorldĀ since itās a fun fic based on one of my fave movies. I also had a blast writing Waiting For UsĀ since itās based on a parody song.Ā
Hardest Fic: Easily Iād Die Without This. It was a fic I wrote for an exchange and it definitely pushed me to my limits of smut and writing in general. I wonāt go into details, but that fic has more triggers than an gun show in Texas.Ā
Do you plan to take Prompts in 2017: I donāt know. I actually have been writing more than Iāve been publishing, just because Iāve been trying not to post WIPs as much. I have about 4 or 5 long fics in the works that will hopefully be posted this year!
What was the best thing about 2016: Joining the Kylux fandom has been awesome (my kylux blog is @kyluxanonymous) and Iām so glad my fics have been doing well with them. :D
What was the worst thing about 2016: Iāve had like, a year long writerās block that has really sucked. Iām really hoping Iām better this year!
Any last thoughts for 2016: THANK GOD ITS OVER.

Hardest Fic: Extended Stay, I flounder and fail when it comes to smut, but I tried with this one. Do you plan to take Prompts in 2017: Maybe? I usually find prompts. But I could probably take them too! What was the best thing about 2016: I made friends from posting stories!! What was the worst thing about 2016: I dunno? Any last thoughts for 2016: Glad I gave it shot and got up the courage to post things. Also I donāt know why it doesnāt count Fantastic Plausibility for 2016, is it because Iām still updating it? Comparison with 2015: Ā I did nothing so itās all uphill from here.

MY THOUGHTS
My goal was increased this year to 75 books BUT I READ 97 WHAT
I always seem to have my best reading month in August. Middle of summer slow-down, I guess. Now, in the busiest month, I canāt remember what thatās like!
May was my repeated worst-month. I am definitely seeing a pattern.
Holy chunksters! Thirteen?!
Reading the entire 13-book series of A Series of Unfortunate Events definitely contributed to my total, not just in book count, but because they were so short I was able to read more in the same amount of time.
Holy crap, ab, stop making me read books.
Thanks to BookCon I was able to add an ARC section! Iām excited for more opportunities to read advanced copies and to be a beta reader. Not sure if this is plausible if I canāt make it to BookCon again.
I really REALLY utilized the library this year. Which is great, but I neglected my own shelf. (affecting my TBR challenge.)Ā
TWENTY NEW RELEASES?! Usually thatās a ZERO. (Well, Saga is an exception.)
I read more but still somehow came short on my TBR challenge. Iām incredibly disappointed in this, but things came up in December that I didnāt plan for. (I did read one extra last year so it balances out, right?)
I wonāt be taking on any additional annual challenges because I need to read books I already own, primarily! No distractions!
Looking at my Top 5 list, Fantasy and sci-fi really won me over this year.

I honestly cannot believe Iāve written that much since April. Nanowrimo definitely helped that word count, but I also dived right into writing without a second glance.
Story Links:
Way too much to link here. Just check out my masterlist.
Favorite Fic: Do I have to pick just one? Right now, I love my Losing You series. Itās given itself a special place in my writing heart. Lyrical Love was a very fun piece to write that I spent a lot of time on, and when it was finished, I was very, very proud of the finished product. The Magic of Melty Chocolate was a super fluffy, written-on-a-whim piece that actually turned out wonderful. And letās not forget Yellow. I never knew I could be so poetic.
Hardest Fic: The Boyking I think takes the cake on this one. It was both a challenge to reach the word count for it during WriMo, but it was also difficult because of the subject matter. I began the story worried about doing it justice, but then realized that I needed to just write. Errors and things can be fixed later. Itās also a darker story than what I have written before, so that was challenging as well. Iāll be revising it in the next couple of months, so I will be posting more parts. I hope you guys will love it as much as I do.Ā
Do you plan to take prompts in 2017? I donāt take prompts. At least, not on a regular basis. The exceptions to that are, of course, celebrations or the random ask that may come in from time to time. *cough cough* Looking at you @impala-dreamer.Ā
What was the best thing of 2016? The fact that I started writing, if we are staying on that subject, and that I āstartedā this blog. Other subjects... I graduated college this year, I saw The 1975 in concert, Iāve made new, close friends on here and irl, friends got married, I went on a mission trip...there have been a lot of fun things Iāve gotten to do this year.Ā
What was the worst thing of 2016?Ā Iāve had my first cases of writerās block that worried me. Iāve felt crappy about my writing and Iāve thrown out a couple pieces that suddenly werenāt going anywhere. Other subjects, I had a friend pass away this year, weāve had lots of family and financial troubles, I had to postpone going to grad school, and at the beginning of the year, I had a friend go through some truly terrifying things.Ā
In conclusion, a quick comparison to 2015?Ā I think Iāve had more fun this year. Iāve gone more places and done more things than I have in the past. Perhaps Iāve been exercising some more independence. I started writing and being more active on this blog, too, which has been a blast all on itās own, but which has also helped me in other ways. I think that Iāve been able to be more open about my interests and fully delve into them, nerdy or not, without embarrassment. And Iāve realized Iām actually not that bad at this writing thing and I may have a creative bone or two in my body. Iāve really, really enjoyed developing my writing skills and this blog. Thank you to everyone who has made all of this worth it, my friends and casual readers, people who have stopped by to drop a like or a reblog, and those who have stuck with me since the beginning. You are very much appreciated!
