It occurs to me that in the few posts Iâve made regarding SAO I havenât actually acknowledged my thoughts on the series, so to make my opinions clear for a second:
- The Aincrad Arc should be fun and the first episode is pretty fun but thereâs far too little good to outweigh the overwhelming âmehâ. The final fight has some dumb asspulls and having Kayaba forget his motivation was lazy. While the art style and most of the animation looks pretty nice, a majority of the fight scenes suck. A fight consisting of sword slash effects over a temporary black screen is lazy and uninteresting. Kiritoâs a boring character, but I kinda like him anyway. Asuna is best girl.
- The ALfheim Arc is straight up fucking offensive, mostly in its treatment of Asuna, you know, the lead female character. Being reduced to a damsel in distress is one thing, but the two scenes in which everything short of rape happens to her are disgusting, especially given that theyâre actually framed in such a way as to be erotic. You could honestly hurl the tentacle monster scene in an actual tentacle hentai OVA and it wouldnât be out of place. Sugouâs motivation of taking over the world is honestly worse than Kayabaâs lack of, and Sugou himself is otherwise detestable (not even in the good way like Dio Brando or Frieza) and forgettable. Animation improves though, specifically by having more actual fight scenes. The little snippets of character they try to add to Kirito donât mean a lot, but I like them. Having Kirito waste his time with the Sylph-Cait Sith alliance meeting kinda kills the whole âsave Asuna in this time limitâ thing, which is shitty, but Alicia Rue makes up for it by being really cute. The incest subplot is one of the best parts of the arc, because itâs not framed in a positive way. Sugu deserves more character than âKiritoâs sister who romantically loves himâ though.
- GGO isnât bad actually. There are numerous questions one can raise about the game itself, and theyâre pretty difficult to ignore, but itâs still got good stuff. Sinonâs actually a decent and interesting character, and her backstory and current status, as well as her status at the end of the arc are actually pretty good. Kiritoâs added PTSD is also decent enough in the bubble that is GGO, but it becomes kinda iffy when you include the Aincrad arc as part of judging his character. Retroactive backstories can be done well. This part wasnât really. The general aesthetic of GGO works very well for the story too. Death Gun isnât a great villain. Having him be Shinkawa (ignoring the other two Death Guns) could have worked with more foreshadowing in the story by having him appear more or something, because the infodump in the last episode explaining his situation wasnât very good. Not that bad an arc though, and again, Sinonâs actually pretty great.
- The filler arc is so boring and uninteresting that I donât even remember its name. I like Sinonâs cat design though. Otherwise, itâs boring, does nothing interesting with the characters, and is hilariously forgettable.
- Motherâs Rosario, I havenât actually finished the rewatch with @meme-emperor yet, but we got like 2.5 episodes deep and I already remember that itâs easily the best arc. @meme-emperor reads all my posts I think, so I wonât say much about this arc, but itâs the best by far and Yuuki is easily best SAO girl. Whether itâs the best of a bad lot or actually pretty good, Iâll wait till weâve finished to say for sure.
I first watched SAO early 2014, I think, and I watched SAO II as it aired. Since Kiritoâs character is that heâs the best and coolest gamer that gets all the girls, the main demographic was gullible 13 year olds. Being 13 at the time, I completely fucking fell for it, and I loved SAO, and didnât acknowledge any of its flaws. I never did rewatch it though, and gradually became aware of its flaws from internet word of mouth. At whatever point, I realised it was shitty. As I stated, Iâve been rewatching it with @meme-emperor (itâs actually his first watch of everything past Aincrad) and Iâm able to experience first hand the garbage that is SAO (except Motherâs Rosario).
SAO isnât good. There are good things in it though, and I like it a lot more than I probably should.
