This is the 1946 edition of America’s most beloved cookbook ever published. ⭐️ In this one, a revision of the 1943 war-time edition, Irma was thrilled to take out the chapter on war rationing and replace it with 30 minute meals because now as life was getting back to normal people were busier then ever. 🐇 This edition also features illustrations by Marion Rombauer Becker, Irma’s daughter and the next generation in line to safely steer the Joy empire into the future once Irma passed away. A long time ago, this was how you dressed for your holiday party. You slipped into your pretty cocktail dress, you set out a tray of fancy homemade hors de oeuvres, you shook up a pitcher of clever Christmas cocktails and you went out to greet your guests. In your apron. Not the workhorse apron that handled all the behind the scenes chores when it came to food prep. Not the apron that had splatters and stains and a bit of kitchen grease woven permanently into its fabric. Not the apron that was tattered and faded from years of use. No, you didn't greet your guests in that one. You greeted your guests in this apron. The one with the sheer nylon fabric and the pretty poinsettia flowers on the pocket. This apron. The one that knew no actual messy work. The one that had never seen a sinkful of dirty dishes or a tomato sauce covered counter. No no. This was a party after all, and in such cases, when you were greeting guests, as hostess at home, you put on your ball gown of aprons. This one. Made of gauzy material, thin and delicate. The one that was soft and silky to the touch, should anyone brush past you while filling glasses. This one that not only looked flawless but made you look flawless too. Like the throwing together of this party was absolutely no trouble or work or effort at all. Indeed. This was party after all. Only beauty and cheer were welcome here! How much money did it take to buy a pottery plant in 1932? $8,000! How many people did it take to keep the pottery financially up and running? An entire town! And so begins the story of Lew Reese and the Scio-Ohio pottery plant located in Scio, OH. From the very beginning, Lew had economy on his mind when he first bought the abandoned plant at a sheriff’s sale for $8,000. Thrifty and dedicated from day one, Lew was totally committed to its success, even physically living in the plant during renovations to make sure time and resources were not wasted. Money was always tight, so in addition to managing the operation, Lew became the salesman too, introducing Scio dishes to buyers in major market cities. But selling dishware during the Great Depression was always a tricky business. Even with Lew focusing on affordable pieces and prices, his finances were always precariously balanced. When word got out that Lew was struggling to meet operating costs, the townspeople of Scio stepped up, in $100 increments, and helped Lew pay all his bills so that the pottery would have a chance to succeed. In what must have felt like a real George Bailey moment, the graciousness and generosity of local residents helped the pottery grow and then thrive for the next 50 years. The pottery employees were equally loyal and supportive too. When a fire burned down the plant in 1947, employees donated their paychecks and residents lent physical support to help rebuild the entire plant. One year later, the pottery was back in operation and this platter was made. I think if there ever was a real-life George Bailey or a real life Bedford Falls, it would be Lew Reese and it would be the town of Scio, OH. It’s no wonder the only marking on the back is a humble, universal USA stamp. This platter was made by everyone in the town of Scio. In one way or another. Cheers to stories of people helping people.
