Chapter 8: Iâll Walk Alone
Chapter Summary: After her conversation with Bucky at the library, Maggie spends the evening in pondering old memories as she tries to find her way forward. Sunday, Bucky spends time with friends, trying not to dread what comes next.
âIs this seat taken, Corporal Ramirez?â
Maggie looked up into the beaming face of none other than Lieutenant Antonio Ramirez, tall and proud in his full-service uniform. His hat was cocked slightly, which only made his expression look more jovial and pleased.
âTony! Oh, Tony!â She leaped from her seat and threw her arms around his neck.
âGood to see you too, baby sister,â he laughed as they embraced. âNow, let me take a look at you.â He continued as they parted, his dark eyes doing a quick survey, crinkling at the corners as his grin grew somehow even bigger. âAll grown up and in the Army.â
âSame could be said for you. Look at you with all those ribbons!â She returned the smile, feeling drunk with her giddiness. âAre you sure youâre not Captain America?â
At this, Tony snorted, âno, afraid not. Iâm not sure theyâre accepting applications for Captain Mexican-American. And at any rate, I havenât even made Captain yet!â
âYouâll get there, Tonito. Youâll get there.â She chuckled, hugging him again quickly. âOh, itâs so good to see you. Sit down. Sit down!â She urged as they stepped away from one another.
âYou order yet?â Tony asked as they settled at the table.
âWell, sorry to keep you waiting. This place is out of the way and tucked out of sight. How did you find it?â
âA friend of mine recommended it to me.â
âOh. Really? A friend or a âfriendâ?â Tony asked wryly.
Maggie rolled her eyes, shaking her head in a weak attempt to not blush. âA friend.â
âAh. Well. Serves me right for asking,â Tony shook his head, opening the menu.
Maggie said nothing, focusing on the menu, trying to decide if she was going to change up her usual order or not. Her eyes darted up every so often just to make sure she wasnât imagining that it was her brother sitting across the table from her. How on earth heâd managed to secure a pass was beyond her, but he was a paratrooper. They had odd schedules and stranger deployment timetables. She wasnât about to look a gift horse in the mouth.
âSo is it true? You got to see one of Capâs USO shows?â Tony continued after a moment.
âBefore he went and started punching Nazis for real?â Maggie replied, peering over the top of her menu at him.
âAllegedly.â He said meaningfully.
âYes. Allegedly.â She agreed, remembering the wartime gossip code. âAnd yes, I did see one of his shows and some of his movies.â
âYou know Danny is green with envy.â
âOh. I know. He may never forgive me.â
âWell, you keep him plied with plenty of comic books and trading cards, and he may find it in himself to forgive you.â
âI donât see what the big deal is. And Besides, you boys have a higher likelihood of actually meeting him.â
âYeah. But not exactly under the best circumstances.â Tony snorted, shaking his head. âBut you know. Iâll tell you what, whenever I run into Capâ and his Howling Commandos, Iâll be sure to ask the Nazis and Hydra and the rest to stop shooting so I can ask for an autograph.â He laughed.
âOh. Well, of course. Iâd expect no less. I am your baby sister.â
âWell. Iâm glad to indulge you every once in a while, Magdalene.â
She stuck out her tongue but was denied an opportunity to respond when the waitress arrived to take their order.
When she parted again, leaving them with their coffee cups filled, Maggie could survey the man sitting across from her more thoroughly. It was her brother. Yet, somehow, even despite the warm smile and the teasing she knew from before the war, he was a stranger to her. He was older, graverâthere were heavier lines on his face, darker circles under his eyes. The round glow of youth stripped away into hardened lines ofâwell, not manhood, so much as the face of war.
âHow bad is it out there?â She wanted to ask but knew better than to ask questions he couldnât answer and that she didnât really want to hear the answers to.
Tonyâs voice pulled her back to the present, and she looked up to see him smiling at her with a look of inquisitive mischief in his eyes.
âAnd what look is that?â
âItâs the âworried about things way above your pay gradeâ look,â Tony answered.
âPerhaps I am, Lieutenant Ramirez.â She conceded, sticking her tongue out. âWould I be your little sister otherwise?â
âWell, cut it out. Would you?â He chuckled. âDidnât swing this pass to have to chase you around the world just so we can have breakfast.â
âWell. Fortunately for you, the Army paid for our tickets overseas. I donât have far to run on this tiny little island, and so you wonât have to chase too far.â Maggie grinned.
âItâs only a shame Danny is out in the bush somewhere and couldnât join us. Or this friend of yours.â
âAnd to think I was going to say Iâd missed you.â She snorted, taking a sip of her coffee.
âYou DO miss me. Only, I canât let you forget that Daniel and I told you explicitly that youâre not allowed to meet anyone over here where we canât give him a good talking toâyou know to make sure that his intentions are honorable.â
âYou are so sure that this friend of mine is a GI. Whoâs to say this isnât one of my friends from the unit.â
âBecause youâre being so damn tight-lipped about the whole thing. You wonât even tell me his name.â
âHave you ever known me to be a gossip, Antonio Ramirez?â Maggie raised an eyebrow. âBesides,â she added with a shrug, âloose lips sink ships.â
âYeah Yeah. You girls and your secrets. Iâll let you have this one. But rest assured, Danny will hear about this and wonât like it either.â
âFortunately for me, that wonât be for some time. Iâll have more than adequate time to defend myself.â
âSo. Since youâre being tight-lipped about your personal life, what else have you been up to? Read any good books? Still doing your calculus?â
