There was, once upon a time, a woman who had two sons, one with hazel eyes and messy hair, and this one she loved more than anything, for he was her biological son, and one with dark brown eyes and straight hair, and this one she hated, because he wasn't related to her in the slightest. The stepson had a beautiful acromantula silk cloak that he’d gotten just before his father was killed, when he was twelve. The son fancied it so much, he told his mother that he must have it.
“Be quiet, my darling James,” Said the Lady, pushing the circular glasses up her son’s nose gently and smiling a radiant smile, “And you shall have it. Your step-brother has long deserved death, tonight when he is asleep, I will come and cut his head off. Make sure that you are at the far side of the bed, and push him to the front.”
If the young lad hadn't been quietly collecting the ashes from fireplace, his life would've ended that night.
All day he was too afraid to go outside and when night fell, the hazel-eyed boy got into bed first, as to sleep on the far side, but when he was asleep, the other pushed his stepbrother to the front and he himself took the place at the back, against the wall.
In the night, the step-mother stole into the dark room, an axe in her left hand, her right searching the bed for the body, then she held the axe above her head, swung it down and unknowingly chopped her own son’s head off.
After the old Lady had left, the sixteen year old and ran across the field to his brother’s house. He rapped on the door, once, twice, thrice, and his brother, Sirius, came out, carefully closing the door behind him.
The younger boy, jumped into his brother’s arms, and Sirius swung him around in a circle, before he pushed the slight body against the door and whispered in his ear gruffly, “I've missed you all day.”
To which the boy replied with a passionate kiss upon his brother’s mouth. After a few minutes, they broke free, gasping for sweet air.
“Listen, dearest Sirius, we must leave, for my stepmother wanted to kill me, but has executed her own son instead.” The younger boy shuddered in his brother’s warm embrace, “When morning comes, and she realises what she’s done, see shall behead us.”
“But,” Sirius spoke softly, “You must remove father’s magic wand, for if she finds it, we cannot escape if she follows us.”
The younger boy tugged his brother’s soft black locks down for another kiss.
After squeezing through the scullery window, the stepson fetched the magic wand and took his stepbrother’s disembodied head and trickled three drops of blood on the ground, one by the bed, on on the stairs and one in the scullery. He waved the magic wand over each, then ran back up the stairs and carefully placed the head in the same position it was in. He then hurried back to his brother, who embraced him tightly, before holding out his hand, which was received with a bright smile.
When the old woman awoke the next morning, she called her son to give him the cloak, but he didn't come. “Where are you?” She cried.
“Here on the stairs, I am sweeping,” Answered the drop of blood on the stairs.
The old Lady ran to the stairs, but there was no one there.
Again she called out: “Where are you?”
“Here in the kitchen, I am warming myself,” The drop of blood in the kitchen replied.
The woman ran to the kitchen, but there was no one there.
Her brow furrowed in despair as she cried one last time: “Where are you?”
“Ah, here in the bed, I am sleeping,” The final drop of blood in the bedroom called out.
The stepmother ran up the stairs and dashed into the bedroom, but what was before her eyes wasn’t what she was expecting, for she saw her own child, drenched in his own blood.
The woman fell to her knees, her hand grasping her son’s tightly. She rose her head up from where it was placed next to her son’s hand, blood smeared upon her wrinkled forehead. She sprang up from the floor and hurried to the window, upon which she placed a bloodied hand. The woman peered out with beady eyes and saw her stepson running away with his sweetheart, Sirius.
“That shall not help you,” She breathed, a cruel smile taking over her lips, “Even if you are far away, you can’t escape me.”
She put on her enchanted boots, in which she could cover an hours walk every step, and it wasn’t long until she caught up to her stepson and his brother.
The stepson however, caught a glimpse of his stepmother striding toward them, took out the magic wand and changed his sweetheart Sirius into a tree and himself into a squirrel, darting around the branches. The woman sat herself at the base of the tree and reached into her enchanted pocket, pulling out a handful of acorns. She sat for the whole day trying to entice the animal, but the squirrel refused, and went into the trunk, taking out a squirrel-sized handful of pumpkin seeds.
The old Lady knew that she had been outsmarted by the squirrel and went home.
As soon the moon rose, the brother’s resumed their original bodies, and after a quick kiss, they were on their way, walking until dawn.
The younger took out the wand and changed his sweetheart Sirius into a fiddler he had seen at the market, and himself into a beautiful black hollyhock which bloomed in the center of thick gorse hedge. Before long, the stepmother arrived and said to the disguised sweetheart Sirius, “Kind sir, may I pick this beautiful flower for myself?”
“Oh, yes,” he replied smoothly, “I will play to you while you do it.”
As she was crawling through the hedge and about to pick the hollyhock flower, knowing exactly who it was, Sirius began to play, striking a merry tune. Even though she didn’t want to, she was forced to dance, for the fiddle was enchanted. He began to play faster and she began to twirl and leap, faster and faster, tearing and scratching her clothes and skin on the thorns, but Sirius didn’t stop until she lay dead on the ground.
Now that the woman was dead, Sirius said, “I shall go to my friends, Lilith and Severus, and arrange the Bonding Ceremony.”
“In the meantime I’ll stay here and wait, but to make sure no one recognises me, I shall turn myself into a giant block of greenstone.”
Sirius left for the village, and the other boy stood in a field as a giant block of greenstone, waiting for his lover to return.
But, when Sirius arrived at the village, a boy with sandy hair and amber eyes fascinated him so, that he forgot all about his brother.
The poor boy remained for a long time, but, as Sirius didn’t turn up, he transformed himself back into a black hollyhock flower and thought; ‘Surely someone will walk this way and tread me down.’
As it was, a shepherd kept his sheep in the field and saw the beautiful flower, which he picked and put in his breast pocket.
However, strange things began happening in the shepherd’s house. Every morning when he arose, the hearth was swept, the fire crackling merrily, the table and bench wiped and a bucket of water sat just inside the back door. Every evening when he returned, the table was laid and a large dinner served. But, because of the fact that no one excepting his son visited him, he was slightly confused. After a month of the odd happenings, he went into the village to visit the wise woman, who was well-known in the kingdom.
"If you wish to find the cause, rise at dawn and throw a white satin cloth over the flower in your trunk, and the enchantment will be broken."
The shepherd then returned home, noting the steaming stuffed duck on the table. He ate a large portion before retiring to bed, musing over what the wise woman had told him.
He awoke a few minutes before dawn and went into his son, Xenophilius’ room, which was decorated with fanciful tapestries of odd creatures and ornate rugs in rainbows of colours which he had stumbled upon in his travels. He took out a white satin cloak and returned to his own room.
When he returned to his room, the trunk opened and the black hollyhock flower he’d picked a few weeks ago hopped out. He gasped in astonishment, but threw the silk robe over the pristine flower. Beneath the cloak, the flower morphed into a young man, whose long black hair peeked out the edge.
The boy stood and the shepherd thrust out the cloak, a blush coating his cheeks. The boy accepted graciously.
“Whom might you be?” the shepherd inquired.
“I am Regulus,” the boy replied. He then told his story to the shepherd, who was so impressed that he asked the sixteen year old to bond with him, but was declined as the boy wanted to stay true to his brother.
Regulus stayed and tended to the house for three months, during which he became like a second son the the shepherd. On the eve of the fourth month, a pale blonde boy from the village, Lucius, handed Regulus a scroll, upon which was an invite for all the kingdom to Sirius and his fiancè’s wedding. He cried, heartbroken over the reason for his brothers betrayal.
‘All men must go to a wedding, if not, by the law that person must be punished with death.’
He was still heartbroken and refused to go to the wedding, but the village boys came and took him. When it was his turn to pay his respects to the couple, he muttered a word of congratulations, but as he turned away, his brother recognised his voice and stood, proclaiming; “I know that voice, my darling brother, come back to me!” The boy stopped and turned, looking at Sirius for a few hesitant seconds, before running into his arms.
They then had their wedding, the church bells ringing. But what no one noticed was the sandy haired boy who Sirius was originally going to marry, Remus Lupin, swear his revenge.
