Today, the burial of Ferdinand Marcos caught the nation by surprise. Ten days after the decision of the Supreme Court to allow the late dictator’s burial in the Libingan ng mga Bayani, the Marcoses and their allies has stealthily planned and carried out the burial. Motions to counter the SC ruling are useless now.

I thought the SC decision to bury Marcos in LNMB was revolting and offensive especially to the Martial Law victims and their families, but what happened today is much much more frightening and sickening. It could be a glimpse of what has happened during the Martial Law, of what more could happen; under-the-table deals, shady proceedings.

Today, I feel like the government has failed us. Yes, I’m saying that the administration has failed the people especially the families of Martial Law victims with no bodies to bury.

Yes, the Supreme Court ruling was technically legal. But is that how the Law should be? Just legal? Shouldn’t it uphold the morals of the country? Of its people? Shouldn’t we go beyond what is legal in decisions such as this? 

They say that this motion to allow the Marcos burial in LNMB will bring healing and unity to the country. But planning the burial of your so-called hero in secret is a punch in the gut. This won’t heal anything; rather, it will open old wounds and new ones as well.

The government has betrayed us. The Marcoses continue to fool us and steal from us. 

What do we do now?

Be more vigilant, I guess. Continue to fight for the truth. And let us not forget to tell our children about the monster that lies in the Libingan ng mga Bayani. For he is no hero, no matter how much they try to erase his crimes.

Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
