I’ve always suspected, although I have no data to prove that, that the debate about whether or not toilet seats should be up or down is not really a debate. Or more accurately, it’s not really a debate until it became one. And I know the next logical thing to ask is, isn’t everything? Literally every debate wasn’t a debate until it became one. To which I say, fair. 

But what I mean by it was not really a debate is in the sense that before it was brought into the social consciousness by sitcom writers looking for a cheap way to manufacture drama, pretty much nobody cared whether the toilet seat was left up or down. And then once people on TV started complaining about it, people in life who don’t have much to complain about found something to complain about.

In 2012, my dad and I saw the news about Philip Baumgartner jumping from the stratosphere, and he said in Hausa, Koshi ne. It’s a phrase Hausa people usually say when someone has done something they deem stupid or unnecessary. It roughly translates as, it’s satiation. Meaning, He/She is not hungry. The implication being, if you had real problems -- hunger, for example -- you wouldn’t be jumping from the fucking stratosphere. 

That’s pretty much how I feel about the toilet seat debate: up or down? And I reply, Koshi ne.

A vast number of people on this planet don’t even have access to toilets, period. Of those who do, a majority of them don’t have the flush toilet. Of those who do, a vast number of them aren’t guaranteed running water. So when they go into the toilet, they’re not thinking whether the seat is up or down, but whether or not they have water to flush. It’s a fraction of a fraction of a fraction of a problem. 

Now of course just because something is a “first world problem” doesn’t mean that it isn’t valid. Of course it is. And if you find yourself constantly frustrated with your partner or roommate for always keeping the seat up or down, your feelings are completely valid. I would suggest that you dig in deeper though. Ask yourself what the frustration is really about. Much like how the dishes fight is almost always about more than doing the dishes, I think the toilet frustration might also be symptomatic of areas in your life where you feel your partner/roommate isn’t being considerate.
