Recently, I was on a first date where we spent the bulk of it arguing, and at the time, I thought it was cute. And then on our second date, she brought it up again -- this time in front of other people -- and made it a point to talk over me. And that’s when I realised it wasn’t a healthy argument for us to learn about each other. For her, it was a competition, and she was in it to win it.

Many years ago, I read an article that suggested than more than anything else -- more than communication and passion and dedication -- respect is the most important thing in any relationship. It vaguely made sense at the time, but it wasn’t till I was sitting next to V at the table while she talked over me at my friends that it really sunk in.

The way I see it, respect is giving space to someone to make their case even if you don’t understand it. It means actually listening to their case, even if you don’t agree with it. It means asking questions, not passing judgement. Because if you respect someone, you understand that they’re wise and capable and at least just as intelligent as you are, so whatever they’re saying that you don’t agree with is either coming from different sources of information, or different life experiences.

It’s possible to maintain a healthy relationship with someone you don’t agree with if you nonetheless respect them, but it’s impossible to maintain a healthy relationship with anyone if you don’t respect them, even if you agree on everything.
