14. The Woman on the Screen
Anyone who owns an IPhone knows that any song you put onto it from a cd will have some kind of image. Usually one of the cd covers. Anyone who was born after 1990 knows how to get a song online without paying for it. Sometimes these songs will also come with a picture. It could be a picture from a live concert, or something personal to the uploader, or just something weird in general.
So, one day I was looking for a song I heard on the radio. I was about to click on it when the page moved. Instead I ended up clicking on a link that said ‘page unavailable- private setting.’ I was going to go back… when the song started. The only way I can describe it is as a music box song, mixed together with tinkling bells, and something else that made it hauntingly beautiful. Needless to say I downloaded it right away.
Once I started it on my player I looked down at the screen to see a woman dressed in a red dress and black tights, and had her hand up in a peace sign. I smiled when I saw her and listened to the song for the rest of the day. When my older sister got home I asked if she knew the girl, and the same to my parents but unfortunately they all said "No."
It was very late, so I went upstairs, still listening to my haunting lullaby as I slept. In the middle of the night I awoke to static instead of song. It was actually pretty scary. Soon after the tapping mixed in with giggle. I took the ear buds out and fell back asleep. It could not have been more than an hour that I woke back up and saw a shadow on my window.
I opened the window and, I kid you not, heard my song. I took my phone with the picture of the woman still on it and followed the song. I must have been pretty distracted because as I walked across the road, a car hit me. I died with the song playing, and a picture of a woman holding up three fingers watching me from the screen.
