the thing that pains me about Eggsy’s situation --- and of course the situations of his friends , his mum , Daisy etc. --- is the UK’s shocking reception towards the lower class . honestly , the stigma and prejudice faced by the lower class in the UK is just . disgusting . and really contributes to other factors , gang violence , drug usage , mental health . the media constantly slams on the less privileged , in particular tabloids like The Sun and The Daily Mirror where , harmful stereotypes are perpetuated , I guess towards everyone who isn’t rich , caucasian , cisgender , male , heterosexual , etc .
the perception towards the lower class is that they’re lazy , they’re leeching off the government , and not taking necessary steps to improve their own living and give back to the country . which , when you look at kids like Eggsy , how can they ? how can they take on a job and give back when society is adamant on keeping them down ? the opportunities aren’t readily available , and if you don’t have a job , you don’t have money , and you turn to other means of making a living . it’s such a vicious circle , honestly , of the problems being caused by the very people who complain about them .
and Eggsy’s a rare case in that he’s avoided the gangs and the lifestyle they offer , he’s avoided getting caught with the wrong crowd that could leave him imprisoned or dead --- to an extent , I mean . Eggsy’s past has him with all sorts , but he’s lucky enough to have walked away before damage is done . and even to an extent he’s avoided falling down that slippery slope of drug usage , keeping it all at arm’s length . but he’s SEEN the damage caused by it all , drugs in particular , like when he’s talking to Poppy about her heroin and how it’s “ ruined a lot of lives ” .
and it explains a lot , really , in the way he lashes out with antisocial behaviour , his perception of Charlie and initially Harry , that rant Harry gets when he calls Eggsy out on his childhood . Eggsy’s seen it all , up close and personal , in a world where society doesn’t want the lower class to win .
